Innis & Gunn Limited Edition Oak Aged IPA (Bottle)

Aroma of butterscotch and sweet toffee. Taste is sweet toffee, crisp and clean. No bitterness, not sure how this is an IPA but it is very nice beer none the less.

330ml bottle from the LCBO. Pours a nice amber (clear bottles always take half the fun out of the pour, because you already know what it looks like) with a thick head that had good retention. Aroma of carmel and butterscotch, and flavours of vanilla and oak. I don’t know where they got the IPA designation from, but I think it’s the best "limited edition" I’ve had from Innis&Gunn.

WOW. What a mess this is. I may pour this due to my unwillingness to drink it... maybe not. Dammit, it’s a very interesting beer that is actually a good beer but I’m sure I’ll feel ill after the whole bottle. Poured out a weak dark gold (light amber?), bright white thick cap with pretty good retention and 360 degree lacing. The smell is no where near any IPA ever created so it will get marks for that. This is definetly unique. Aromas of butterscotch, weak herb, some unknown fruit, toffee? The aroma is very persistent which is nice and oddly appealing. Very sweet smelling. The taste is mainly oaky / whiskey / butterscotch with the hops becoming more noticable albeit still mild. A touch sour later on, one can find some alcohol bite. Nice smooth mouth feel, closing on medium bodied mainly due to the thickness it imparts somehow. Soft but slightly undercarbonated swish. Dry sweet malty sour hop (little bitterness) finish. I did not think I would get through this entire bottle but now it’s gone and I could drink more although I can’t convince myself that I really liked it. Remind yourself that you will not be drinking anything that resembles an IPA, period. Self note - I did not rate on style on this one, sort of.

"Nice looking bottle in a special addition box the beer it self looks a pale honey brown and capped off with a noisy thin head. Aroma is a not so pleasant butter scotch, oak, the hops isn’t really noticeable the only thing I can smell is oaky butterness caused be the oak barrel aging and it’s not working for me. Aw fawk gross nasty all I taste is butter and rye the after taste is all butter. There is a mild bitterness in the beginning of the sip what might be slightly pinny but then the pure butter takes over there is a slight oaky malt flavour. This is just all wrong, it’s different and I never did give it the dump but this is not an IPA I have no clue what it is buts it’s not an IPA."

Bottled, 330ml, pasteurised. Gold with white head. Heady, brandy nose with the oak interweaved through, but quite tart on the palate, a sourish caramel flavour. There is caramalised sugars, sweetish, medium body, but no zing or liveliness. Decent but without added pazzaz.

With many thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Golden yellow with a small white head. Aroma: Vanilla & caramel, perfume and slight whiskey. Flavour: Quite lemony, caramel, hops, sticky, fruity with a butterscotch/caramel finish.

Bottle outside work (about a month ago) at lunch time as one of my work mates wanted to try the IPA version ... Golden blonde ... quite whisley for just oak ... zezty lemon nose ... mellow fruit ... little whiskey again ? ... light bitter sweetness

Nov 20, 2007 Clear golden poor with a small white head. Delicate aomas of butterscotch, oak, dates, vanilla... Very unique IPA thats for sure. Very creamy medium bodied ale, slightly oily mouthfeel. Oak flavors, slight citrus, butterscotch finish. Very live carbonation with a great balance between bitter and sweet. Very interesting mouthfeel.
