Eructoblaster (1477), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jan 27, 2008 Bottle - 330ml. Dark gold body with average carbonation and a decent white pillowy head. Aroma is misbalanced as it is totally dominated by caramel. Taste is thin and lacks complexity. It ends with a short sweet/oaky finish. Disappointing. probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jan 19, 2008 330 ml bottle from LCBO (in a box...oohlala), served cold in a tulip glass.
App.: Deep golden, clear, small rocky white head.
Aroma: Very sweet, lots of caramel and toffee, gobs of vanilla (vanillin), organic acids cower in the background; as it warms, a fair amount of acetone (pear drop), a bit of burnt sugar,
Palate: Medium body, a touch syrupy, fairly soft effervescence with the occasional sharp bubble.
Flav.: Wood and vanillin, sweet, some old apple juice, caramel/toffee, some fresh apples too, a bit of alcohol; acetone begins to dominate as it warms; cloying with an annoying bitter tang, leaves far too much oak-like after-taste.
This is not pleasant. Completely lacking in hops, weak on malt and dominated by aggressive, obnoxious wood flavours and an acetone defect. Make an excellent beer and use wood as a seasoning. Don’t expect the wood to do all the work. DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 17, 2008 330ml LCBO gift to myself. Pours a clear coin gold with some lively fizz building a small lacy white cap. Smells fruity and a hint tart, and sweet vanilla. Mild palate. Taste is led by toffee and a rather ’open’ hop profile and overall top en aromatics. The oak does not clobber it like a bad chardonnay. It’s enjoyable and a little different - inventive/expensive you might say. GRM (1237), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Jan 15, 2008 Transparent bottle in a box, 330 ml, best before DEC 2008, purchased at the LCBO; eye: amber, clear, nice and good effervescence, white head similar to that of champagne that then becomes creamy, a bit of lacing; nose: oak dominates, a bit of malt; mouth: oak dominates, vanilla, a bit of malt, caramel, finale in oak with a good presence of caramel, a bit thin, medium body, average carbonation, lightly sweet, no bitterness; overall: quite enjoyable
Sweet flowery oaked wood malt aroma with candied butterscotch. Clear, orange yellow body with a quick foamy white head. Sweet sweet oaked butter flavour with a hint of leafiness. Medium body is smooth. Seems overly sweet but has nice wood characteristic. blankboy (3165), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 11, 2008 Bottle. Pours a clear gold with a large lasting foamy white head -- looks nice! Aroma of caramel malt, toffee, oak, light hops, vanilla and a touch of citrus -- I quite like it. Flavour of caramel, biscuit, oak, vanilla and light hops -- it’s nice that the oak is part of the flavour and doesn’t completely overwhelm it like some oak aged beers. Average bodied. This is quite good, and way better then last year’s edition, I’ll have to get more. mannika (98), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 5, 2008 330 mL bottle. Pours golden with a lacey head. Aroma is a very sweet buttery toffee, very similar to the normal oak aged beer. Flavour is quite nice, sweetness from the aroma is present, but it is balanced a bit by the more bitter hops, moreso than in the normal oak aged beer. Mouthfeel is a bit thin, but other than that, this beer is quite good.
