Bottle: Pasteurised.
Brewed by Belhaven for Innis & Gunn
Ingredients: Golden Promise and Crystal malt; Phoenix hops.
We are delighted to present this unique limited bottling of Innis & Gunn finished in oak barrels which previously contained navy rum. Maturation in special oak barrels imparts Navy rums with the sweet, spicy character for which they are renowned. We have long wondered what flavours might be imparted to our beer by finishing it in these same barrels and earlier this year we decided to find out. We brewed a special batch of Innis & Gunn beer and matured it in oak for 60 days. Every single drop spent half of that time in American oak barrels before being refilled into selected navy rum barrels to finish the lengthy maturation. Once the beer had absorbed the unique character the barrels were emptied, the beer blended and then maturation continued for a further 47 days until all of the flavours had married together and mellowed. We think the result is absolutely delicious!

330 mL bottle from Wine Warehouse Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear copper color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Thanks to the clear bottle a good wave of skunk has spread across the room. Other aroma notes include butter, wood, spice and rum. The taste is rum, wood, toasted malts, butter, floral hops. Medium bodied. Decent.

Draught. Surprising light expression of oak and booze aging. The navy rum flavor and smell are distinct as is the oak tanin on the palate. And the booze is not hidden. But somehow that is not all in your face like so many imperial stouts. Really pleasant for a change. I get alcohol flamed bananas vanilla and coconut or maybe i am just remembering my last painkiller! The aroma is clean malty. Flavor is very sweet. The texture is smooth and it finishes cool and fast with little carbonation in the palate. Pretty enjoyable as a ’painkiller’. ;)

Had at Michael Jordan’s steakhouse. Vanillaey, a little rum taste, very smooth. Liked.

330ml bottle poured into a tulip. A fairly aggressive pour yields a one finger head over a clear ruby colored beer. Head fades to a ring around the edge of the glass. Smells of dark fruit and molasses with the rum also present but subdued. Some sweet caramel too. The flavor is sweet from the get go with subtle rum notes along with cinnamon, raisins, and other dark fruit. Some wood is present. Some alcohol is detectable about midway through and the beer finished with some light hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is a little bit on the watery side but not too bad. Overall I am quite happy with this beer. The rum is not too overpowering and the sweetness is held in check. An excellent sipper that I would love to have again.

Has a nice copper-burgundy body with a quickly disappearing foam head. The aroma is a typical I&G mess of plantiness, hops, fresh wood, and it’s something I don’t find very appealing. The flavour is heavy planty wood notes with just a hint of rum sweetness and a sugary finish. I can’t say I like this line of beers, though they are unique, but they come across as unbalanced, harsh and cloying. But they are certainly memorable.

Bottle. Fantastic contrast between the rum and light hops. Spicy. A good mature taste. Gave me a warm glow...
