Flyer (118), Hartland, Wisconsin, USA Jun 3, 2007 A clear bottle always makes me nervous, and this beer was somewhat skunky. So this review might be considered atypical, but not unfair -- if you use a clear bottle, you take your chances. It had a golden pale caramel color, with some malty aroma finding its way through the skunkiness. There wasn’t a lot of flavor -- a little oak up front, but otherwise this struck me as a fairly standard Euro-lager. The finish was smooth and clean. Average at best.
JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada May 30, 2007 Updated: Aug 12, 2007Pours a dark orange, brown colour, with very little head which is odd. Smells strange, malts, alcohol, I guess the strange aspects come from the "oak-aging" in barrels used to make scotch. Taste is strong, very little hops or even malts, all I could taste at first was alcohol and whisky. It’s pretty alcoholic tasting for something that’s only 6.6%, which isn’t all THAT much. There’s some vanilla and caramel notes hidden amongst the woody-barrel and scotch tastes. Aftertaste is sweet and bordering on pleasant. The aroma is kind of getting on my nerves. Seems like they might have gone a little overboard on the whisky aspect, which kind of leaves me feeling like if you want to something that tastes like whisky then just drink whisky, and leave the poor vat of beer alone. This beer costs more and is not worth it in the end IMHO. I’m not proud, but this was my first serious DRAIN POUR. Thaichile (599), 10aFly, New Jersey, USA May 23, 2007 Bottle. Pours a cream soda color with a sliver of a head and not a whole lot of carbonation. Nose is wood over a beery scent. Flavor is sweetened oak muting the underlying funk/beer notes. I enjoyed the flavors stemming from the time spent in the oak barrels, however, I was disappointed in the overall beery flavors. It was balanced but leaned to the caramel tones. This beer has potential and maybe if it is fresh, it is much better. Additionally, at $5 a bottle, I rather doubt I will be experimenting with this beer again in the future. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland May 18, 2007 While this smells quite nice (vanilla smokey) and has an interesting flavour(sweet vanilla, and fruity) to start with i found it really quite clawing by the end and struggled to finnish it. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA May 17, 2007 Color is a beautiful honey-amber, promising a good ale experience. Aroma has strong fruity overtones. Flavor has a brandy-like bite, but is otherwise fairly typical of a good ale, with smoky/burnt undertones and just a hint of apple or pear. Smooth yet edgy, this is a beer made for sipping rather than guzzling. OleR (2008), Oslo, Norway May 15, 2007 330 ml bottle. A crystal clear, golden brown beer. Thin beige head quikly reduced to a ring of foam. Prominent sweet whiskey aroma. Also hops, honey, sweetish fruits and toffee. Taste is sweet and malty with a wooden note. A decent hopbitterness makes up for the liqueur-ish mouthfeel. Good body. A bit on the sweet side for my tastebuds. Nevertheless, a nice one! garthicus (1216), Toronto, Ontario, Canada May 7, 2007 Honey and oak aroma, very pleasant, honey-amber colour with a small head. Smooth on the tongue and has a subtle hint of hops and malt, I found the alcohol to be disguised well and it had a very soft finish, enjoyable and would buy again thornecb (1736), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA May 6, 2007 Pours tea-colored into a shaker. Bright white conglomerate head with excellent retention. Vanilla and whiskey aromas. Smooth with whiskey front to back. Different palate - somewhere between soft and crisp. Lasting oak, caramel, vanilla and hops finish. Slight alcohol burn.
