KingofCastle (202), London, Ontario, Canada Dec 13, 2006 Updated: Nov 21, 2007bottle: Run out of scotch? Like licking oak boards? This beer is for you. I can’t imagine how anybody enjoys this awful taste on its own. When this warms, it is completely undrinkable & tastes like the worse macro ale you have ever had (think Wee Willy with motor oil it)! Drinking this just gave me a headache, so I dumped it down the drain. I love big, bold ales & bitters but they have to taste good (imagine that). This is pretentious crap which won’t be around in 2 years, because all of these cowardly raters who pretend to publicly enjoy it, are privately throwing it down the drain too & not wasting their money any longer. Brutal product. Cheers to the honest reviewers here pointing out its cloying sweetness & astringent taste. I’ll take the worst macro brew pale lager ANY day of this. Blue Light & Budweiser looks brilliant next to this. Doppelganger (1353), Dry County, Arkansas, USA Dec 13, 2006 Clear bottle, Tesco. Copper with a smallish layer of off-white. Skunk hit this one a bit. Some earthy, breadiness, under that, a bit of minty hops. Some fo the skunk hits the flavor too, a bit distracting. Bright, otherwise clean malt. Surprisingly mild bitterness that fades further as the glass progresses. A bit thin. Not terrible, but the "limited edition" version of this is vastly better. Lars’ bottle from Inverness/Elgin gave me joy tasting this whisky oak aged brew. Notes of oak and whisky, but it needs complexity to be an ESB. A bottle to be dranked a lot if you can stand the whiskynotes.
french tickler (642), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Nov 28, 2006 Updated: Dec 14, 2006Drank in an English Pint. Clear golden poor with a sticky white head. Aromas of vanilla creme brule, old whiskey barrells, toffee, Worthers original?... Long dry aftertaste. This beer should defnitely be tasted chilled as per its instructions. You can definitely taste what you smell, just not as impressive. Extra added hints of maple syrup. Good bitterness. Grovlam (3790), Copenhagen, Denmark Nov 28, 2006 Bottle. Very clear light golden colour, with a light creamy like yellowish head. Very special aroma I thought. A mix of oak, roast, malt, coffee, whisky hits your nose. A meticulous examination of the sniff, gives you hints of hop and grassy notes as well. Mouth feel is not that powerful as the previous description would let you to believe. Medium bodied. Considering the bouquet, it is reasonable complex. The strong point is defiantly the bouquet and the finish, which is almost a full display of the before described aroma. Medium bitter-sweet and well balanced. Nice surprise and the best “Extra Special Bitter” so fare. Was able to compare it with “Morland Old Speckled Hen” that just seams monotonous compared with this ESB!.....well that is just my subjective opinion. Gethinbeer (995), Nova Scotia, Canada Nov 27, 2006 Updated: Aug 16, 2008Slight hint of honey and whisky and sweet oak. Great clear orange colour. Good carb. Nice frothy head. Tastes a little of whisky, smooth. Leaves a malty taste. Not my cup of tea. Definitely an interesting beer. jazz88 (2235), San Francisco, California, USA Nov 26, 2006 Bottle. Golden color with a white head. Musty, basement, straw, smooth buttery floral vanilla flavor with lively carbonation. Rating from notes. unclemattie (2370), Georgia, USA Nov 23, 2006 Picked up this clear 11.2oz bottle at Harry’s Marietta. Color of honey. White fizzy head. Aroma of an ashtray. Cigarette ashes? I got the aroma of the oak but it is more specifically of a Winston. Easy drinking. With lots of flavors of wood. Oh, its in the taste. Balanced malt/hop palate. Don’t know if it is worth the $5 dollar retail, hate to dee what it costs in a bar!
