| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 6, 2006 The second ESB of the evening...This one also looks appetizing, with a clear, copper body and a lush, white head. Intensely smokey and bready aroma, very sweet - even of maple, and definetly woody. The flavor is also quite sweet, with a large dose of maple and smokiness. Smooth and easy to drink. notalush (2645), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 6, 2006 Clear straw color, with minimal but lasting head - very oaky, vanilla aroma, with touches of whiskey, buttered toast - very distinctive oak and whiskey character in the flavor, but not an overwhelming one like in a lot of beers aged in barrels - somewhat bready but overly sweet - honey and spice in the finish - it’s a shame they filter and pasturize this; it would probably be a hell of a lot better if they didn’t. Malty and sweet aroma featuring vanilla, citrus and grain whisky. Sweet flavor of grainy whisky and resinuous hops. Whisky, pepper and woodiness in the finish. Distinctive but not overpowering whisky character. wunderbier (1266), Tampere, Finland
| 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Aug 4, 2006 11.2oz bottle, Bordeaux glass, bbe 16/06/07. A restrained layer of frothy white foam forms--after some vigorous coaxing--over a deep brass hue of crystal clarity. The scent upon opening the bottle, and for the first few minutes in the glass, is strongly dominated by that insidious mammal...the skunk. At least they’re using real hops. That aroma dissipates to some extent after a few minutes of breathing but never vanishes in entirety. Caramel, toffee and white bread sweetness are the simple malt offerings. A strong grassy aroma is quite pervasive and leans into a bright, perfumed, oak presence. Perhaps a slight nuttiness escapes around the edges. Forward sweetness is grainy, thick with caramel and bread. The sharpness of the oak’s perfumed nature never seems to manifest itself in the flavor and the beer is rather severely denatured of almost any acidity--a touch of lemon peel perhaps entering in the finish. The aftertaste is long winded and grassy with a thick sweetness remaining upfront. Oak flavors are intertwined throughout and likely the only well done aspect of this whole show. A bit thicker and fuller than water, the mouthfeel is a bit flat, though there is a rather sticky quality to the texture. Carbonation is reserved though, I imagine, bursting for a beer from that side of the pond. If it weren’t skunked and dead this might manage ’oddly interesting’...as it stands...
