4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Colour: Ruby red, with decent size but quickly evaporating head. Nose: Swirls of butterscotch, light hop, touch of fennel. Oak is distant but noticable and so soft on the nose. Taste: Medium-high sweet, medium-light bitter, light sour. A sweet-bomber...but with gentle ease and lots of other players. More herb, this time rosemary. The butterscoth returns and infuses itself with the oak to produce the softest wood-laced magic and it ripens even more through the finish. Stunning stuff.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2011-10-23. Crisp dark amber orange body with a small beige head that fades. 3+ Flavour is fairly sweet malty profile, light bitterness and hops, creamy sort of vanilla like character that I assume is from the oak. The wood is muted otherwise and not overpowering like some of their other offerings. Hints of citrus in the finish, maybe? 6+ Light alcohol notes in the aroma, mild oak and vanilla, caramel. Decent but not entirely to my tastes. Bottle from LCBO

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This "Canada Day" ale claims be an "oak-aged scottish ale" on the packaging.... Ruby-amber body with tanned airy and creamy top. The bouquet is composed of finely crafted oak massaged into an amber sugar malt body. There is a delightful woodsyness of oak-barrel breath. A clean oak profile throughout. The flaovr reminds me of a pleasant Candian whiskey. A stronger oak presence makes itself known and there again is te well apportioned woody character--this time also accompanied by soft vanillins. Well-crafted and nuanced. Not very scotch ale-like--more of a Canadian Whiskey ale.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
The pour is a bright golden copper with a thin ring of beige head. Some carbonation in the body. The nose is sweet and woody with a light fruit and mild biscuity malts. The taste is sweet mostly with a light earthy tone and subtle oaky note. The malt is of light caramel and biscuits with minimal hops. Overall, note a bad brew at all and one that truly enjoyed.

2.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
[330ml bottle courtesy of cgarvieuk] Darkish amber pour, decent white head. Sweet, vanilla nose. Sweet, fragrant flavour. A touch caramelly, but that extreme sweetness overpowers everything else. Are we giving the Canadians the gift of tooth decay for their celebrations?

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from the LCBO. Ruby-copper with a small off-white head. Aroma of vanilla toffee, bourbon, toasted oak with a hint of hops to take the edge off. Medium bodied, good mouthfeel. Flavour follows on the aroma pretty closely - initially seems like it might be too sweet, but after a few sips, it comes together nicely. Vanilla toffee is predominant, with an oaky backnote, a wisp of woodsmoke, and quick Fuggles hops in the finish. As with several other I&G beers, the beer itself could use a bit more heft, but in terms of flavour and character, it’s quite alright.
