COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle: Pasteurised.
2009 version brewed to a different recipe and with a higher alcohol level 7.7% vs. 6.4% of the 2006/2007 version). Included in an Innis & Gunn gift pack released to the Canadian market for fall/winter 2009. From the label: "The unique flavour of IPA originated in the 1800s during long sea journeys on the trade routes between Britain and India. Beers were transported in oak barrels containing hops, which preserved freshness, and arrived having absorbed the character of both the oak and the hops. We are delighted to present this Limited Bottling of IPA which has been oak aged with the addition of large quantities of fresh hops giving this beer a burst of orange aromas and a zesty fruity character."

Ok, this has to be a joke. I think Innis & Gunn (Belhaven) make a fairly decent oak aged ale, but if they have a desire to branch out they should try something else entirely. Instead, they make a beer so similar to the original recipe that it almost seems like a re-packaging trick. Pours a clear orange-brown body with a small, white head. Smells like caramel pudding, and not a trace of hops enters my nose. Taste is caramel malts and sugary hints of whiskey. Some boozy tones lingering in the aftertaste. Light and fairly drinkable, but seriously: an IPA? An IPA??? Come on; this is as far from an IPA as one can possibly come: not the tiniest bit of hops anywhere! Get a grip, people - this is a genre abuse and Innis & Gunn could’ve easily have called this a pilsener or a sour ale; both genres are equally far from an IPA. Learn your genres Belhaven, and come back when you fathom the reality gap here.

Pours pale amber with a firm head. Smells like cheap Canadian whisky. Flavour is toffee, wood and alcohol; tastes like watered down Canadian whisky.

Bottled. A golden beer with a thin beige head. The aroma has notes of caramel, wood, hops, and citrus. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, butter, straw, oranges, and wood, leading to a bitter finish. Thanks Joergen for sharing.

Bottle (33 cl) from Systembolaget. Clear deep golden, medium rich creamy white head. Bready malt aroma with clear but restrained (a good thing) wooden notes with some vanilla and coconut, and some floral, earthy, and herbal hops. Medium bodied and smooth. Initially a bit sweet, dry finish with medium bitterness. This is my best I&G so far, I actually finished the whole bottle!
