Sample at a tasting at Systembolaget, February 2013. Dark brown with a small head. Sweet aroma of toffee, some whisky and malt. The taste was better than expected. Whisky, toffee, butter and light roasted malt. Rather mild. Drinkable but not that exciting.

Comes out of the tap a deep coffee brown with a fairly thick and fine-bubbled light tan head. Aroma is not strong, but has inviting roast malt, caramel and licorice notes, as well as a hint of whisky-soaked wood. Satisfying flavor has a core of roast malt and notes of caramel, licorice, horehound and whisky, slightly but not cloyingly sweet. Smooth, robust texture has some good fizz and leaves a pleasing malty, syrupy finish. Special indeed - especially because I love stouts and barrel-aged beers that sop up whisky (or whatever) and woody flavors!

Poured into a standard pint glass (of course). Very dark, opaque deep brown to black with a good 1/2 inch tan head. Head settled but didn’t disappear. Good lacing. Aroma of coffee with a hint of whiskey. Taste is a bit more complex than a Guinness but not as overwhelming as some ’newer’ store try to be. Quite good and very drinkable.

Most important with this beer is that the whiskey barrels add to the complexity and don’t drown out the stout, which tasted like the foreign stouts I’ve had more than the standard style. Caramel, chocolate, vanilla, toffee... better and more complex than many imperial stouts I’ve had.

Bottled. 31/12/12. A near black beer with dark red hints and a pool of whitish head. Sweet caramel, toffee and chocolate in the whiskey free nose. A sweet oaky feel to the mouth, Fruity. Has the woodiness of the barrel aging but no whiskey; and lacking much by way of stoutness. In spite of all that it’s tasty enough if like me you like sweet beers.

Bottle and served in nonik pint glass: Pours a deep ruby highlighted deep brown hue with a small frothy head that left minimal lace. The aroma has notes of corn whiskey, green apple and pear esters, some oak and herbal hops, a bit of Diacetyl and heavy crystal, moderate roast, charred wood and pale malt vapours. The taste is unique with a twangy green apple Cidery note more than a tart Acetaldehyde character. Brash alcohol of the whisky cleanse the palate from the heavy crystal, roast, chocolate and biscuity malt overtones. A splash of herbal hops on the finish along with some tannic oak and a touch of char. The mouth feel is smooth but a tad under-carbonated. Ashy and dry tannic finish. It is okay, a bit disappointing. Not really stout like IMO. More a strong ale in more than one way.
