3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 thb (617) - Alberta, - JAN 12, 2013Clear golden brown - light gets all the way through. No head. Aromas: yes, treacle, but with loaaads of butter. Also, wintergreen. The closest I have ever come to having a beer that tastes like root beer. Really quite a lot like root beer. Plus booze. Not satisfying as a porter, and judged against "beer" in general, it doesn’t stand up, but something about it is just hard to dislike too much.
3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pictoman (102) - British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 20, 2013
Poured from 330mL bottle. Dark reddish brown with minimal beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, hint of banana and some butterscotch. Taste very much the same with some cherry licorice and alcohol. Slightly bitter finish, medium body.
4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 MarkSachon (352) - Pennsylvania, USA - JUN 1, 2013
12 oz clear bottle from Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh. Very nice, loved every sip.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 sm89walt (1599) - Norwich, Norfolk, ENGLAND - MAY 27, 2013
330ml bottle. A deep chestnut brown with a fading one finger light tan head. Aromas of molasses, brown sugar & toffee apple mid-fruits. Brown sugar to the fore, some roastiness, mid to dark(fish), dried fruits and an ashy, burnt sugar bitterness. Medium body, medium to full carbonation with a slightly hollow mid-palate attributed by the pasteurisation. Modest intensity and relatively lingering finish.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Holmen1 (1187) - NORWAY - MAY 27, 2013
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Osprey87 (586) - London via, WALES - MAY 23, 2013
Very nice packaging. Dark red / brown. Smells a bit like smokey whisky with coke, nail varnish. Taste is quite musty, more whisky and coke, buttery. Oak really comes through. Not much of a finish - a bit watery although overall there is plenty of flavour. A bit sickly, sharp.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 pintbypint (2000) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 6, 2013
330ml clear bottle. medium brown with a bit of red in it. Whitish cap that thins out quite a bit to leave only a ring in the glass. A few random streaks of lacing but nothing major. Nose has notes of chocolate, molasses, and a slight bit of dark fruitiness. Taste has some roasted notes, chocolate, light grains, mild sweet notes. Dryish end, traces of chocolate, crystal malt hang around, not a ton of oak character. Hides the 7.45 abv well. Body is medium, tight carbonation. Overall not bad, but pretty simplistic.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Sammy (7120) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - MAY 4, 2013
A fairly basic porter, courtesy of the LCBO. Pours slightly brown without a lasting head. Slight molasses smell. A tad light mouthfeel. Not very interesting or that drinkable.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 HeistAlmighty (850) - Saint John, New Brunswick, CANADA - APR 26, 2013
330ml bottle. Colour is more of a really dark amber or copper than the brown /black I’d expect for a porter. Aroma is fruit, vanilla, earthy hops, hint of chocolate. Earthy and fruity, some more vanilla in the taste. Pretty thin for a porter. Overall, strikes more more of a strong brown, but not so much a porter.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 gramity (1090) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - APR 22, 2013
Fruity and chocolaty notes and nice bitterness. Lacking the full body of a porter, but a nice flavor. Brownish red in color with a fading white head.
2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 sulawang (419) - British Columbia, CANADA - APR 15, 2013
pours dark cola brown with a small dissipating head, ringed retention, lots of active streams, some thin lacing. Sweet malts and a hint of cola on the nose.
Attack: aggressive 9/10-sweetness mixed with detectable alcohol
Mid-palate: malts, rum-like alcohol (from the molasses), cola, traces of nutmeg, light roast, mushroom earthiness
Finish: persistent alcohol detection, mildly hopped med-bitter finish.
I have to say the mid to finish flavour is quite flat. It’s not all that exciting and is best had with a meal.
