2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Swing-top bottle from Binny’s Beverage Depot in Plainfield, Illinois: It poured a slightly hazed, very pale yellow body with a tall head that provided much lace. It had a very light aroma, sweet and grainy with some candy corn. Very soft mouthfeel. The flavor was grainy and sweet with some damp grasses... and light. Drinkable, to be sure, but this needs something. Anything.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
.5 liter swing top. Pours a slightly hazy stale woody yellow with a nice fluffy white head and nice lacing. Aroma is DMS- a bit of corn, raw undermodified pils malt, grainy gritty, and a touch of acetaldehyde. Flavor is stale old pilsner malt, a bit dank and cobwebby- low to no hops used- and the body is almost lackluster the beer is just showing not much signs of life- just bland and boring and obviously not even fresh, yet I think it was recently imported.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Swing-top bottle. Pours clear dark yellow with a large, fizzy and rocky, white head, somewhat lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cooked grain, meal, cereal, wet hay), light hops (dry grass, flowers), average yeast (sweat, must) with notes of apples. Light bodied, sticky to gritty texture, lively carbonation, and a metallic to chalky finish. Short duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

2.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Flip top bottle and served in pils glass: Clear straw hue with a lasting frothy white head and very good lacing on glassware. The aroma has notes of grassy and floral hops, grainy and biscuity malt, and some notes of band aid as it warms. The taste is rather pedestrian, mild malt and slight fruity notes with almost no note of hops. Some chalky notes upon the finish. Pretty much grainy and little else. The mouth feel is... well drinkable... which works for Bud Light but is a damning indictment of a German Helles. Where is a Great Lakes Dortmunder when I want one?

3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle. Pale transparent yellowish color with a very healthy head. Not really an impressive aroma, very Eastern European. The taste is pretty thin and straightforward, though pretty true to style. Nice sweet and creamy yeasty finish. An OK example of a Helles, middle of the road stuff.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
16.0oz bottle from Edelweiss in Portland, OR--Poured a pale clear golden straw body with a thick two-finger creamy off-white crown. Sweet corn metallic malt biscuit grain nose. Corn-like sweet grain dominates flavor profile. Light, tangy sweet thin mouthfeel with medium carbonation. Finished with residual sweetness of cereal grains. A little too bright on the sweetness factor but overall a decent helles.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, swing-top. Nice grassy, citric nose, slight toasted grain. Pale golden body with a creamy white head, very large and excitable. Watery body has a bit of malt added on, with a sweet, slightly corny taste, a lively citrus on top of everything else. Subtle floral hint in the bg. Just a touch of a tart zing and pleasant carbonation. Not the best out there, but spritzy and refreshing, and I’m a sucker for a good session lager, which this certainly is.

2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20
19-Mar-08 (500-ml swing-top bottle: Purchased 17-Mar-07 for $3.49 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Malt aromas are somewhat bready and hops are dusty, slightly musty and a bit spicy. Flavors are lightly bready, a little woody, and mildly hoppy, but the finish takes a left turn towards cardboard. Bitterness is mild and the beer has almost no sweetness at all. Very dry on the palate and highly carbonated with light-medium body. Pale golden in color, the beer is exceptionally clear, which really shows off the slow rising of the scores of tiny carbonation bubbles. The white, foamy head builds to a full inch before settling to a thin layer. Plenty of spotty and patchy lacing is left on the glass. Drinkable, but not enjoyable and certainly below average for a German lager.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
500 ml. bottle. Orange tinged golden color with a reasonable white head. Aroma is semi-baked bread with a bit of noble hop. Body is near medium with coarse carbonation that bites lightly. Flavor is bread and a decent amount of grassy hop. Arguably crisp and clean. Good mouthfeel.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Pours a lightly hazy gold color with nice white head. The nose is crisp and toasty with a light grassy hop note. A bit thin on the mouthfeel and body but it has a creamy light malt note with a crisp snappy hop finish. Very light easy drinker, about as light as I’ll venture and still enjoy.
