Previously Innstadt Hefe-Weissbier

Bottled: Warm, fruity (banana, annanas), light sweetish aroma. Cloudy yellow, light orange color, huge creamy head. Flavor is light sweet, some toffee notes and sourish fuity. Quite sourish, light dry and light bitter end. Quite ok but poor finish.

Bottle. Pours light yellow with a huge, frothy, white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (cereal, grain, meal), light hops (grass), average yeast (sweat, earth) with notes of dust and corn. Light bodied, oily texture, soft carbonation, and a chalky finish. Average duration, light sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Lightly hazed dark golden color with a tall cream colored, soft head. Wheat and mild vanilla and cream scents. HInts of circus peanuts, seems a bit stale in aroma. Sweet grainy wheat flavors in the front. Bit of herbal hops and some light fruit. Not quite right. I would guess this was sent over on a very warm boat. Not a clean, fresh hefe.

Bit of a damp aroma, little bit of wet mildewy cardboard. Still, there’s some dry wheat and a bit of lemon there too. Very clear pale yellow, only got some haze and a darker shade after I swirled the yeast up. Plenty of lasting head. Drainpour. Here’s where the cardboard comes in, like the beer was just plain old. I can’t read German, is this pasteurized? That would explain the dead flat depressing flavor. Bleh.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2009 Bottle. Banana, orange, clove and wheat malt aroma. Cloudy yellow amber color with giant white head. Wheat malt flavor with light banana and clove notes. Less fruity/spicy flavor than aroma would lead you to expect. Pretty nice.

I think I picked this up at the Binny-apostrophe-s in Orland Park, IL. Poured into a Hefeweizen glass, it displayed a hazy yellow/straw body with a tall ampersand retained creamy head that laced heavily. Very highly carbonated. There were plenty of fresh bananas in the nose anlong with soft wheat malt and lemon. The flavor saw the addition of a light touch of clove and even more lemon. It finished on the somewhat bitter note of citrus rind. Pretty refreshing beer.

Swing-top bottle. Malty wheat nose, actually detecting a ton of banana for once, with vanilla creme, yeast, and faint clove. Hazy pale golden pour with a tall, picture-perfect rocky white head. Again, banana creme pie flavor, could do with some tartness, but otherwise very drinkable and free of offenders. Very smooth, silky smooth medium body and a dryish, wheaten end. Actually more of a light body with the extra from the yeast. Deft touches of spice and lemon evident with some volume. Well crafted and doubtless qualifies for the upper tier, but far from mind-bending.

04-Apr-08 (500-ml swing-top bottle: Purchased 17-Mar-07 for $3.49 at Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) A great presentation starts with the flip-top bottle, then proceeds to the textbook pour. Hazy, but not cloudy, golden-yellow in color with a tall, white crown of foam that very gradually settles to a thin layer. Lacing is poor, however, because it slides right down the glass. Gregarious yet balanced aromas of peppery spice, extremely ripe banana, musty books, and sourdough waft from the glass, pleasuring the senses with an enticing greeting. Yeast-induced spiciness and fruity, ripe banana esters are equally generous on the palate, with a late finish of mildly tart and sour breadiness. After several sips, the ripe banana and heavy doughiness are easily the two dominant aspects of this beer. There’s a hint of hoppy flavor and bitterness, but it’s very light. On the palate, the beer is medium in body and high in carbonation, but despite the sweet, fruity esters, the beer is quite dry on the palate, especially in the finish. Unfortunately, the heavy, doughy finish that sits on the palate eventually leads to the palate feeling stale and this hurts drinkability. But overall, this is a fine, full-flavored hefeweizen worth trying at least once.

This German Hefeweizen pours a medium yellow gold color from a 50cl swing top bottle. Medium to large sized off white foamy head, with nice lacing and good retention. Aroma is wheaty, citrusy with some banana. A medium bodied Hefe. The malts are wheaty, with some yeast and a little banana and clove. The hops are spicy. Nice balance. Lively carbonation. A nice hefe, a very refreshing beer on a warm summer night. Mouthfeel is full. The finish is crisp and clean. The aftertaste is slightly bitter.
