3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 rbrazell (961) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JAN 1, 2012
Growler courtesy of Forrest at Fermentation Market. Black pour with a small brown head. Nose deep roasted malts and coffee. Flavor one dimensional roasted character, earthiness and some lactic acid. Pretty light bodied for being called a imperial stout.

Tap at Intuition. Clear, dark cola pour is a good tan head erupting. Decent lace. Muted nose with roasted malt and mild coffee. Taste brings a big roasty character with acidic coffee, lemon, mild lactic sourness in the back end. Huge roastiness along with moderate ash and medium dark chocolate cocoa powder. Lighter mouthfeel and quite lemony and acidic. Good stuff. Feels more like Irish dry stout. 8% is unnoticed.

Tried on tap at the Florida Brew Fest 2011 addition. It pours a nice looking mahogany with infra red edges and pretty effervescent mocha head with swirls of whiter hues here and there. The aroma is roasty, a little bit of toffee covered burnt toast and chocolate covered malt balls. The taste is full dark roasted malts to near robust levels with lighter notes of toffee, espresso and burnt toast. It stays highly roasty to just about being burnt without reaching ashy levels as it stays grounded with lots of light chocolate malts and maltiness. Wait, this is an Imperial Stout here on RB? Well that’s not right. This is a very good stout though.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2011 Pint at the brewery, third and final beer I tried at their grand opening party 11/20/2010. This was an excellent stout. Pour was black with a medium tan head, aroma of sweet dark malts. Beautiful and delicious. Solid and flavorful stout. Medium to full body. Flavors of sweet dark malts, brown sugar, soy, molasses, and roasty coffee. Don’t know what the ABV was, its not listed on their web site and I didn’t see it posted or listed in any of their materials at the brewery, but it also had some horsepower. More samples are merited.

12/12/2010 .. Sadly, no stout tonight.. ABV is 9.0% per the bartender at the taproom. No wonder I was loaded after the last encounter. Awesome stuff and I’m anxious for more.

1/8/2011 .. gallon growler at the CASK Brewclub Banquet. This latest batch is near identical to the first except tamed down to 8.5 from the original 9.0% abv. Too bad.. I love impy stout.
