Draft... RBWG 2013... Midnight black ale with a mid-sized, creamy, mushroom-colored head. Fantastic retention. The aroma boasts malty components of chocolate and toasted nuts. Full-bodied with soft carbonation. Both the flavor and finish are acrid, burnt and bitter. There’s a clinging charcoal aftertaste.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at the brewery The ale poured a deep black in a sniffer. There was modest lacing from a creamy tan head. This was a wonderful experience. The complex black IPA had aroma of choclate and coffee. The medium body ale had average carbonation. There was a bitter finish with moderate alcohol warmth. Some aftertaste of coffee and licroice on the tongue. This is a black IPA worth trying.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Kickback’s, JAX. Pretty nice pour, a thick but not overly sludgy brew with reddish tints and a silky head. Nose is quite resinous with just the right addition of roasted malts to avoid the drawbacks of many examples of this style. Grapefruit rind and pine meld nicely with the understated roasts in the taste, almost like that bit of peel that sometimes makes a good espresso. But there’s considerably more hops than that suggests, a modest imbalance in exactly the right direction, making this a pretty fine black IPA.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the brewery during RBWG 2013. Pours clearish brown with a creamy tan head. Rich pine, lots of dark berries, certainly some alcohol presence. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Fairly bitter to finish, moderate alcohol warmth, burnt pine, subtle roast. Good.

Black pour with creamy tan head and lace. Aroma of toasted maltiness and a medium resiny/citrus aroma also a hinto abv. Sweet malty start, roasted malts, hinto abv, and a hard bitter finish that was almost harsh. Medium bodied and fizzy. Kinda like a really attractive woman who swears too much, harsh but you gotta keep going back for more.

Purely stout with a tiny bit of hop. I expected a black IPA, but the smoothness was replaced by a bold chocolate flavor. Very robust

Tap at Intuition, RBWG. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Nose is roasty, cocoa, tangerine, grass, light grapefruit, light black patent. Flavor is similar, errs on the roasty side but the dry hops add some nice balance and juicy notes. Solid for a style that is hard to do well.
