3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 yayforbeer (745) - Orange Park, USA - JAN 9, 2011
Several samples from a gallon growler at the CASK Brewclub Banquet, brought by Intuition Ale Works brewmaster Ben Davis. Dark brown beer with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted dark malt and chocolate. Very rich and full flavor with roasted dark malts, chocolate, and a sharpness which I assumed was from the rye, but I’m not sure. Plenty of hop flavor and bittering. Good flavor and palate, and very sessionable at only 5%. I enjoyed this one.

On tap at GABF 2011. Pours a almost pure black color with a medium white head. A sweet nose of caramel, rye, some hops in there competing. The flavor is very nice; rich robust spicy rye, some caramel, toasted malts, a bit thin. Very smooth. Nice.

Tried on tap at the Florida Brew Fest 2011 addition. It pours perfect mahogany with light mocha head. Nice looking beer. The aroma is roasty with a pleasing level of spicy rye like notes and citrus hops creating a yummy smelling combination. It tastes has an initial pulse of roast to it and then rolls up a thick layer of firm rye spiciness. Toward midway it picks up additional notes of citrus and spicy hops. Nice full rye spiciness that I can really sink my teeth into. Easy drinking full flavored YUM.

Draft at brewer. Of the four beers I drank at intuition this was my least favorite but it was still tasty. Almost black pour with a roasted grain scent. Bready taste.

Tap at the brewery in Jax. Poured a hazy, muddy, deep ruby to brown with really no head or lace. Nose is cafe latte, milk chocolate. Taste is rich, heavy roasted malt, toast, pumpernickel. Pretty raw and sharp body. Excellent bittering hops. Far better palate than the other offerings. Also for an FYI, 8% rye will never create a rye flavor in beer. Rye is extremely subtle and would need 30% at least to make something a "Rye Ale", which this is certainly not. Could pass as a brown ale.
