COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inveralmond Brewery was founded in 1997, but its young brewers are already rated among the best in Scotland. Blackfriar is the first in a series of beers honoring the role of the familiar orders of Dominican monks in the history of Perth. It is, naturally, a dark brew, hardy and warming, with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a nice hoppiness. (Okay, it’s actually more of a deep burnt sienna than black, but "Deepburntsiennafriar” just didn’t have the same ring.) Blackfriar is loosely described as a ’wee heavy,’ but its assertive hoppiness will quickly dispel that notion. It may not fit in any classification, but Brother Daniel declares it an ’instant classic,’ and we think you’ll agree.

Bottle. Hazy brownish amber pour with a lasting creamy beige head. Aroma is sweet and fruity with notes of raisins, currants, toffee, ginger and grass. Flavour pretty much mirrors the aroma with a little bit more spice. Mouthfeel is slick and watery with moderate carbonation and a lingering sweet, slightly spicy finish. This really is quite good; it’s well made and tasty although it’s just a bit sweeter than I would prefer.

Pours nice. Dark brown with a almost white head. Great lacing and retention. Malty and fruity aroma almost the aroma of a bourbon barrel aged brew. Taste is immediately malty and roasty. Really dry. Smooth and tasty. I’m surprised how dry this is. Full almost slick body.

Bottle 500ml. Dark copper with a nice medium head. Aroma grass, herbs. The typical English malty taste, slightly sweet and bitter. Not Bad.

50cl bottle. Pours a dark amber with a nice head. The nose has ginger biscuits and a little cream. The taste has a buttery-creaminess with more of the ginger biscuits going on, then the buttery-toffee-creaminess comes back. The palate has a medium to big structure, then the middle section has a medium to large texture and the finish is fairly clean on the end - not bad. Overall, it’s not bad, but a bit sickly in some ways.

Bottle from Alko in Pello. Reddish brown with a large lasting head. A lot of malt in this one, also caramel, some light hops and bread. On the sweet side. Quite good.

GBBF Cask. Clear amber beer. Residual off white head. Nail varnish on the nose! Light dry palate. Sweet dried fruits. Estery banana underneath. Mild alcohol heat. It’s not bad but lacks a bit of cohesion.

Bottle 500ml. A clear brown-orange colour with a large white head. A strong aroma of malt, caramel and citrus. The taste is sweet and light bitter. A medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation and a long finish.

Pours a clear mahogany with nice small head that lingers for a while. Smell of sweet malts, some figs and caramel mostly. Taste goes has the big maltyness, not much hops, more a litte earthy feel. Finish of with a metallica boozy felling that I’m not fond of.

Bottle. Clear mahogany with big soapy dirty tanned head that lace. Aroma: Sweet with lots of berries, some orangepeel and a caramel maltiness that also shows almond paste or fruit cake and some flowery hop notes. Sourish. Taste: Is sweet malty with some berry acidity and a sour bitterness. Toffee, red dry sour berries, some orange peel and a hint of apricot, tea, herbs. Body is medium to bigger with low soft carbonation. Hmm... Ok. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle form bierzwerg.de. [thanks nightfall]
Clear orange mahogany with a medium, frothy, off-white head. Light fizzy but still good duration. Aroma is complex, roasted caramel, a hint of chocolate, some black pepper, grassy hops, a hint of raspberry. Medium carbonation, fine creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is mild, good maltiness, toasted caramel, light roasted notes, a bit of raisin, some mild liqourice, soft salty. Sharp, but elegant, grassy and floral hoppy bitterness in the end. Very elegant beer.
