Bottled, special
Inveralmond Brewery was founded in 1997, but its young brewers are already rated among the best in Scotland. Blackfriar is the first in a series of beers honoring the role of the familiar orders of Dominican monks in the history of Perth. It is, naturally, a dark brew, hardy and warming, with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a nice hoppiness. (Okay, it’s actually more of a deep burnt sienna than black, but "Deepburntsiennafriar” just didn’t have the same ring.)
Blackfriar is loosely described as a ’wee heavy,’ but its assertive hoppiness will quickly dispel that notion. It may not fit in any classification, but Brother Daniel declares it an ’instant classic,’ and we think you’ll agree.

Bottle, 11C. Dirty amber with a pale beige head.Aroma of toffee, spice, flowers, surprisingly strong citrus - oranges, grapefruit. Slightly solventish. Lowish carbonation is nice, quite creamy textured. Sweet caramel, peach. Spices, light floral. Quite hoppy, but the citrus disappears. Gentle finish with a little bitterness. Well in date, but maybe didn’t travel that well.

Bottle. Pours a hazy coppery brown body with a small white head. Nose is banana, butterscotch (in a non-diacetyl-ish way), caramel, raisins and hints of red fruits and grains. Taste is caramel, butterscotch, raisins, nuts and hints of grains and raisins. Medium body and carbonation. Pleasant scotch ale.

Bottle. Orange-brown pour with a creamy off-white head. Aromas of toffee, vanilla, oak, licorice, and a touch of bread. Licorice comes out more in the flavour, with some toffee and a light smokiness. ABV is very well masked, and the mouthfeel is a little thin for the style. Very nice flavour though, and overall a tasty scotch ale.

the aroma is caramel and fruity with hoppy and wine notes... the taste is rich, rather sweet, with shades of herbs and chocolate... aftertaste is sweet and bitter...

A rich darkish ale with a lovely complex depth of flavour. Toasted malts, noticeable wheat, chocolatey sweetness, spicy notes and floral hops. Lovely beer, very easy drinking for a 7%er.

Very nice brew for the cold weather. A traditional ale with tons of malt balanced with some hops. I would love to try this with spruce or heather.

0.5l bottle. A blurry kinda dark amber almost brown looking one in the glass and it has a medium sized first bubbly then more creamy and lacing (which by the way looks like tiger strips) light beige top. On the nose it gives away sweet malty toffee sweetness with a fudge like present. Also there are traces of yeast and dried dark fruits. It actually smells fairly nice this. It has a mild oily mouthfeel and the carbonation is soft and gentle. Tastes much the same as it smells. It’s malty and caramel sweet, a little bit of wet rocks and yeasty nuts. A little peppery arugula like sting in the finish and aftertaste makes it even more interesting. A little bit of alcohol is also present here. Got way more than I was expecting. 13.11.2013

Bottle. Nutty brown, clear. Scottish caramels, hazelnuts. Slightly sweet malty nose with herbal hop notes. Full bodied with caramel sweetness, but still ok balanced. Overall quite tasty nice scottish ale.
