dwyerpg (2174), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA Jul 17, 2006 I thought this was both an excellent beer for the style and in general. A very nice aroma, with a pretty red, not black, color. Initial taste is a little chewy and malty; then it gets a very very dry finish. A nice Scottish beer (the wee heavy’s usually are). jde123 (707), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 5, 2004 Updated: Sep 22, 2004A great great great! scottish ale, definately better than others I’ve had. Pours a dark brown with subtle hints of burgundy. Sweet aroma leads to a nicely balanced flavor of malts and hops. One of my favorites!! davesarman (159), Waconia, Minnesota, USA Oct 22, 2004 Purchased from Blue Max on 9/15/04 for $5.09/btl. Nice sturdy malt aroma. No off aromas, actually smells quite fresh. Deep amber color, clean and clear. Very light carbonation, medium tan head that lightens up a bit, but manages to stick around for the whole bottle. A nice blend of malt and hops here. This has a bit more hops (a bit more everything, actually) than their beer that I sampled previous to this, LIa Fail. Still this is an impressive beer, and tastes about as close to a cask conditioned beer as one would hope from a bottle. Nice clean finish, hops and malt are balanced nicely. Categorized on this website as a Scotch ale, it might be a bit hoppy for that designation. Maybe an ESB or Old Ale (because of the alcohol) to push it a bit. Nonetheless, this is an ale, I don’t mind having in my glass one bit. jimhilt (1493), Bow, New Hampshire, USA May 3, 2004 Pours a white, one finger-head leaving a nice lace. Nice clear amber color. Good carbonation. Medium bodied. Nose is raeson/cider. Starts malty and sweet, finishes with a good mix of hops and malt but a slight bitter/hoppy aftertaste. $4.20 for a 500ml bottle. doublebock (165), USA May 23, 2007 Grape-wine like malty aroma, orange amber color and it appears that the bubbles are almost suspended. High alcohol content evident, with nice maltiy-grape like flavor and a nice hoppiness on the side of the tongues.
