Inveralmond Brewery was founded in 1997, but its young brewers are already rated among the best in Scotland. Blackfriar is the first in a series of beers honoring the role of the familiar orders of Dominican monks in the history of Perth. It is, naturally, a dark brew, hardy and warming, with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a nice hoppiness. (Okay, it’s actually more of a deep burnt sienna than black, but "Deepburntsiennafriar” just didn’t have the same ring.)
Blackfriar is loosely described as a ’wee heavy,’ but its assertive hoppiness will quickly dispel that notion. It may not fit in any classification, but Brother Daniel declares it an ’instant classic,’ and we think you’ll agree.

I love malty Scotch ales. This one is malty, but also has a bit of a hop bite which, to me, is not a good characteristic for a Scotch ale. There are enough hop monsters out there; while this is no hop monster, I was hoping for a malt monster ala’ Macandrews or Traquair House. This is still a mighty fine ale though, probably the best balance of malt and hops that I have tasted if you want to look at it that way. The ABV is pleasantly warming, as you would want from a Scotch ale on a cold winter’s night by the fireplace.

Bottled. Pours dark rusty copper color, hazy with a mediumsized head fading with some lacing. Aroma of caramel, dark fruit, dates and spice. Medium sweetness, light bitterness, slight dryness to finish. Medium body, slick texture.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Clear amber/brown body with a medium beige head. Low carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of fruit pudding, caramel and toffee. Flavour of rust, fig and raisin with a tangy finish. Thin to medium body with a sticky texture. Soft fizz. Unusual, nice.

Rating #1388 13.12.2014 330mL Bottle #13 from the 2014 Craft BeerAdvent Calendar. Deep burnt sienna pour with a bubbly tan cap. Aroma is roasted malts, toffee. Taste is quite sweet at first, malt and toffee, full bodied. I enjoyed this beer more as it started to warm. Bold caramel sweetness that lingers, delicate bitterness. Lovely scotch ale.

sulawang (901) - British Columbia, CANADA - NOV 24, 2015
Visual: Pours murky root beer brown with virtually no head, barley any retention, way too much suspended floaties. Nose: light boozy, toasted caramel malts, (lvl-6)-pungency Attack: slick-flat/micro fizzy Mid-palate: bitter alcohol, (lvl-8)-sweetness, (MAIN) red apple, toasted caramel malts, brown sugar/molasses Finish: soft tangy, malty sweet-light cola finish. Summary: Thick and heavy light typical scotch ales, this one is decent although the relatively low ABV is easily detected.
