COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inveralmond Brewery was founded in 1997, but its young brewers are already rated among the best in Scotland. Blackfriar is the first in a series of beers honoring the role of the familiar orders of Dominican monks in the history of Perth. It is, naturally, a dark brew, hardy and warming, with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a nice hoppiness. (Okay, it’s actually more of a deep burnt sienna than black, but "Deepburntsiennafriar” just didn’t have the same ring.) Blackfriar is loosely described as a ’wee heavy,’ but its assertive hoppiness will quickly dispel that notion. It may not fit in any classification, but Brother Daniel declares it an ’instant classic,’ and we think you’ll agree.

An absolutely sensational beer! A fantastic burnt chocolate taste with a strong aroma. A dark pour with a settled body. Overall a brilliant and easy drinking beer!

Poured into a Duvel glass. Pours with nice frothy head that lasts for a while. Colour is a deep reddish brown and is fairly clear and still. Aroma is roasty, with a hint of fruit like plum. Taste is kind of bitter with the hop coming through. I was expecting quite a bit more malt tones, but it’s not overly malty at all, which is a little disappointing. Mouthfeel is Ok, but not much to talk about. Overall, good beer but not as good as I expected.

Ottima!

50 cl bottle @ home. Rated on
Aroma has sweet malt with some caramel and toffee. Flavour is sweet with caramel, toffee, some nuts and hints of berries. A decent English Strong that could be a Scotch Ale as well.

Aroma is malts, black licorice and caramel. The flavor is caramel, fruit-raspberry/strawberry and a mild hoppiness. Easy to drink for an ESA, will have to try this again.

here is another situation where i think i got an old bottle, it was dusty at the store. aroma is astringent and burns the nostrils a little. pour is beautiful dark brick red with a hefe like head. flavor is again almost pure alcohol and some dark sugars, then a lot of wateriness and no depth. finish is ok but still rather heavy on just alcohol. one to try again someday when i get a fresher bottle.

Without any research, I expected a beer named Blackfriar to be, well, black in color, but it actually pours a hazy, amber-brown body with a thin blanket of light-tan head that fades quickly to a thin ring. It’s an easy beer to drink, mostly fruity and malty, with flavors of caramely and somewhat roasty malts and a raisiny, figgy fruitiness, plus toffee, brown sugar, dark toast. It’s moderately sweet, but not sugary, and there is a mild smoky, roasty character in the finish that provides a very gentle and lingering bitterness. Medium in weight, low-medium in carbonation, and slightly dry in the finish to help balance the malty sweetness. The nose offers aromas of dried fruit, toffee, caramely malt, and a light grassiness. Overall, a nice, fruity, and malty beer that’s pleasant and easy-to-drink.
