COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inveralmond Brewery was founded in 1997, but its young brewers are already rated among the best in Scotland. Blackfriar is the first in a series of beers honoring the role of the familiar orders of Dominican monks in the history of Perth. It is, naturally, a dark brew, hardy and warming, with a slightly sweet malty character balanced by a nice hoppiness. (Okay, it’s actually more of a deep burnt sienna than black, but "Deepburntsiennafriar” just didn’t have the same ring.) Blackfriar is loosely described as a ’wee heavy,’ but its assertive hoppiness will quickly dispel that notion. It may not fit in any classification, but Brother Daniel declares it an ’instant classic,’ and we think you’ll agree.

500ml bottle in an English pint. Pours reddish copper with a light beige head. Aroma of caramel, some cereal, light hints of fruit and toffee, and floral hops. Flavor about the same. Average texture. Not a bad beer.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Deep caramel pour with a small, short lived beige head. Nose is full of deep and dark fruits with a little toffee apple behind it all. A lot of sweetness comes through in the taste. Lots of added, rich and heavy fruits - currants, raisin, date. Very nice and easy drinking for 7%

Tasted this in Blackfriers, Glasgow in December 2008. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear copper russet in colour with a thick creamy white head. Strong toffee aroma with some Christmas spice. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed complex malts give a spicy maltloaf base with highland toffee and nutmeg flavours present. Surprisingly strong hop presence gives a spicy note to the long bitter aftertaste. Finish is malty with a fiery, sweet sherry quality in the warming alcoholic booming note. This is a classic Scottish Strong Ale and well recommended.

Half, from cask @The Rake, London. A low greyish- blond head, atop a clear chestnut brown body. Caramelly malt tones up front, offset by a whiff of canned dark fruits and somthing acidic. Medium sweet malt flavor, distinct sour tones underneath. There is some fruits too, Raisins and prunes, also a light acidic berry-like fruitiness. Mild bitterness. Soft mouthfeel, but feels very light, despite the 7% abv. Fruity acidity in the ending.

(Bottled, rated 2011-03-19) Clear, darkish red-brown with a medium, brownish head. Caramely maltiness in the nose with a touch of woody stuffiness and some berries. Slightly metallic flavor with unpleasantly bitter vegetables, toffee, and very berryish, roasty maltiness. Medium body, lowish CO2, slightly burned. A huge disappointment, not again...

Flaske 0,5l fra Alko Muonio. Drukket hjemme 30 Mai 11. Pen etikett!

A bit sweet. Appropriate alcohol content. Looks a dark amber in the glass. Finished pouring from a 50 cl bottle with a thick creamy head. Similar mouthfeel. A bit hoppy with caramel and fruit tones. Love to try it on tap somewhere.

Cask at the GBBF. Copper with a small off-white head. Fruity aroma with apple, pear and dried prunes. Sweet malty and fruity flavour with a touch of almonds and notable alcohol.
