3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
330ml bottle from OB Sydney. Pours, er....pitch black with ample fluffy beige head and minimal lace. Decent stout-style aromas of roasty dark chocolatey malts, coffeebeans, and a trace of cherries. smoke and salty sea air. Palate is quite light bodied for the style with roasted dark malty bittersweet flavours and a trace of brine. Finishes medium bitter and quite dry. Would certainly be well matched to freshly shucked oysters.

Full bodied smoked manuka taste that shouts stout. Coffee lingers on the palate. Sophisticated and fulfilling.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottled. Poured cola brown with a short-lived, yellowy-beige head. The aroma picked up sweet chocolates, honey, and vanilla.. light salty and smoky accents.. I really enjoyed it, and wasnít expecting to. The flavor found well-roasted black and chocolatey malts with a hint of lactic tartness.. touches of salt and smoke again on the roasty finish. Light-medium bodied and tacky at times on the palate.. OK feel and flow.. overall a very tasty brew.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 22, 2012 Thereís a very good reason to drive down to Invercargill, and itís NOT to go to a cafť and be kicked out by an anti-Semite owner. The one great purpose to go to Invercargill is because itís on the way to Bluff, where some of the best oysters in the world are. Ok, thereís more, and of course thereís the brewery in Invercargill, where they make the Pitch Black, which is likely one of New Zealandís best stouts! Round and hearty, solid, chocolaty but not too sweet, and pitch black indeed, glistening like the fur seals that dive out of the kelpie waters to watch the oyster harvesters face the sub-Antarctic temperatures of the south sea spray. This is the stout not only for the oyster season and the long winter nights watching the fire, but it is also pleasant and reassuring to carry anyone across the tussock-covered hills on those deliciously chilly summer days of Southland.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours black with a lasting tan head.
Nose shows roasted coffee and cocoa. Quite sweet-smelling really, not all that much roasted malt.
Flavours are more roasty, with little of the complexity found in the aroma. Some bready malt.
Body feels a bit watery and is over-carbonated.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pitch black pour with a thin tan head that quickly disappears. Aroma is full of roasted malts and thick chocolate. Not as chocolatey in the taste as I was expecting. More mocha-like. Loads of roasted malts and dry biscuit as the undertones. Lots of chocolate and coffee mingle to finish it off. Medium to full creamy mouth feel with soft carbonation. Sometimes the easy drinking stouts lack a little flavour and are a little thin in the mouth. This one isnít like that. Nice stout
