when I first tried this beer, shortly after moving to NZ, I hailed it as the best beer in NZ. In the mean time the craft scene has evolved and I wouldnt call it the bezt these days but it cetainly still is a very nice drop: Pours a very dak brown (but actually not quite black), small dark head. roasted aromas, chocolate, slightly nutty. smooth taste of chocolate, sweet maltiness. low to medium bitterness. judging by my burping, its got fairly high carbonation or maybe I’m just drinking it too fast because its so quaffable...

Pours black with a lasting tan head. Nose shows roasted coffee and cocoa. Quite sweet-smelling really, not all that much roasted malt. Flavours are more roasty, with little of the complexity found in the aroma. Some bready malt. Body feels a bit watery and is over-carbonated.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pitch black pour with a thin tan head that quickly disappears. Aroma is full of roasted malts and thick chocolate. Not as chocolatey in the taste as I was expecting. More mocha-like. Loads of roasted malts and dry biscuit as the undertones. Lots of chocolate and coffee mingle to finish it off. Medium to full creamy mouth feel with soft carbonation. Sometimes the easy drinking stouts lack a little flavour and are a little thin in the mouth. This one isn’t like that. Nice stout

Bottle 330ml from King&Godfree. Exceptional stout, with a great nose. Aromas of milk chocolate, coffee, and hints of caramel. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, long length. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Black, with a frothy head.

From a 330ml bottle on 11/10/2011. Pours close to pitch black with a big head. Has quite a strong smoky, lightly roasted malt aroma. The flavours are relatively subdued, with more roasted malt and a little bit of milk chocolate. Solid but unspectacular.

As black as it comes under a mocha head that subsided in my pint glass in short order. Aromas dominated by charred malt and burnt coffee. I’ll be brutally honest and say that it’s not a favourite characteristic of mine to smell in New Zealand Stouts, but I’m sure there’s room in the beerscape. Flavours dominated by the charry roastiness, dries on the palate but to be fair stays drinkable to the very last.

Deserves better than the score I see above. Nose has a lovely molasses toffee smell. Quite unique. Lots of licorise, cola and chicco babies with a decent roasty finish. Only draw back is the thin body, but this can be easily forgiven considering it is only 4.5%. Dead set unique and a very well crafted beer. Hats off on this one.

330ml bottle. Pitch black hue - lives up to the name, impressive large foamy dark tan head slowly diminishes leaving lots of lacing. Aromas are very nice chocolaty, coffee, dark roasty malty which I like, nice leather aroma lingering in the background. Taste is complex - mildly to moderately sweet, light moderate bitter, faint sour and acidic notes. Finishes dry bitter then slightly chalky with average to long duration. Texture is oily-watery, body is light to light medium, carbonation is soft. A bit thinner than I expected and not a stand-out but overall I really enjoyed this beer.

Black, tan head. Aroma of toast, chocolate, milky coffee, prunes. Taste has light roasted malt, pruney sourness (I don’t know whether this a fault or a feature, but it’s really too much) and coffee. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel. Dry finish with a little bitterness.

330ml bottle. Deep, dark and black in colour with a tan crust of foam. Pours thick and heavy. Sweet malty iced coffee aroma and a long lasting sweet burnt toffee flavour fills the mouth and is silky in the swallow.

small bottle (330ml?) Appearance: Certainly looks like a stout, deep dark cocoa and cafe au lait head, big and thick like a root beer float with swiss cheese lacing; Aroma: Yeast is the firs thing that hits your olfactories, then as you taste it, chocolate (creamy sort) and a touch of coffee or mildly burnt wheat toast; Taste: nothing sweet that I can tell, a definite light sourness co-mingled with a bitterness; Palate: Creamy, full bodied, a touch of astringency, and not exactly dry textured but a hint of it. Overall: I think that as with most low alcohol beers yo get an attenuation of their real potential. This seems to be the case here. It is a nice stout though.
