The latest offering from Invercargill Brewery is a traditional Belgium farmhouse ale we’ve called Sa!son, that’s taken three years to get from concept to keg.

Orange zest gives a citrus tang to this effervescent style with hints of bubble gum and coconut, with a tart finish.

Saison is French for Season. Originally this style was made at the end of winter, heavily hopped to preserve it through the summer months so it could be doled out to farm workers at the autumn harvest.

The Invercargill Brewery interpretation has been laid up for three months to allow the flavours to mature and soften.

Get in quick for this one. An extremely limited edition 600 litre batch is available on tap at the brewery bottle-store and a select few bars and bottlestores.

Bottle at Fork&Bottle, Zurich. Hazy golden, nice head. Intensely bitter, orange zest aroma. No compromise hoppiness, hints of fruit. Nice.

12oz bottle pours a very hazy orange color with a lot of frothy head. Nice wild yeast flavor, a little citrusy. A lot of flavor for a saison. High sweetness. There is an oakiness, but I don't think it's been in a barrel.

The head is good, the body blond and cloudy. It smells yeasty, malt-aromatic, bit hoppy, aromatic. The taste is alcoholic, fruity, bit spicy, yeasty, a bit dry, aromatic, nice! 3.8

From 330 ml bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a rocky white head. Aromas of orange juice, orange zest, hay, lemon, banana and spice. Taste is a little funky at the front, but fresh fruit - notably apple, orange and banana - come through. Touch of cloves. Lemon zest bitterness at the end. Peppery citrus aftertaste. Very good.

From a 330ml brown bottle. Cloudy amber body beneath a large fluffy white head that shows good retention. Aromas of orange peel, straw, malts and a hints of blue cheese and pepper. Taste is delicious somewhat tart bittersweet malts with a lovely dry spicy hop finish. Refreshing slick mouthfeel with a medium body and spiritely carbonation. A very commendable Antipodean attempt at this style. Would love some more!

This was fantastic, in fact this is the best Australasian Saison I have had. Lovely, balanced taste that leaves you regretting your decision to not buy more than one!

One of the things I love about my relatively new conversion to posh beer is learning about the weird origins of so many styles. They used to brew this beer for the peasants at harvest time and, um, this is quite nice. I’m getting some honey and mandarin on the nose, and then when I drink it there’s citrus peel that bounces tangily across the tongue and right underneath. There’s quite a lot of hops in the finish too. Is it finished already? I reckon those Belgian peasants would have had the same response.

330ml bottle delivered from the brewery. Aroma: big estery heavenly Belgium yeast aromas dominate. Blissful spiciness; clove, nutmeg, light cinnamon, and honey, bread dough, just mouldy tangelos, at the end some cheese, and coconut. Taste: is "sweet, kind of tart but we think you’ll like it" (though not quite like Ocean spray cranberry juice). Some notable sourness in the long finish. Palate: Lively carbonation which loses it exuberance fairly quickly, lightly syrupy sticky texture, crisp dry, slightly tart finish. Overall: started out ok and just kept on getting better as it went, ended up being delicious.
