What did they do, use the drippings from smoked meat instead of water when brewing this? Possibly the most savory beer I’ve ever tasted. This would be perfect for a smoke OD, washing down some burnt ends.

2012 vintage. Subtle malt on the nose and the colour is a nice dark brick red. Not overly carbonated, but where this beer shines is the smoked malts that come through.

Draft. Hazy caramel color. Aroma of porkfat. Taste is meaty burnt pig flesh. Thick and chewy. Taste side by side with the Schenkerla Spezialrauchbier courtesy of Eric. The kiwi version is meatier.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 3fourths (7064) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - JUN 18, 2012
bottle. rich nose of peat and smoked ham complete with honey drizzle and light tough of esters. soil and peat character suggest alcohol simply from past experiences with scotch, I have to say. has a pleasant crispness with a medium body and delicate but full carbonation and soothing softness, that’s what makes it so good. lovely texture. sweet malt suggests honey and ham, and light hop bitterness with a touch of smoke astringency tingle the tongue. the body is certainly airy and fluffy, but perhaps more so than I like, and the grains are a bit coarse. I prefer a little bit more richness and fullness with the sweetness in strong lager and rauchbier. still, quite delicious and easy to love.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Cybercat (2519) - Georgia, USA - JUN 6, 2012
Strong, malty aroma has a firm smoky overtone and a hint of - bacon? I get a hint of yeast as well. It pours a clear, coppery brown with a decent eggshell head. Malty flavor has a barbecue overtone, smoky and a little sweet, with hints of yeast and hops. Firm-bodied texture has good fizz. An interesting ale.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 dfearnley (349) - Alberta, CANADA - JUN 4, 2012
Poured from a 341mL bottle into (sadly) a plastic cup
It pours a pleasant clear amber with a 1cm head. Aromas are smoky, maple, and peppercorn. The smokiness is strong in the beginning and lingers. A nice amount of maltiness too helps balance the smokiness.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2012 Aroma is smoke, grains and a hint of nuttiness. The flavor is smoke/BBQ, mildly sweet malts and some warming alcohol in the finish.
2.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 6/20 drpimento (1936) - La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 27, 2012
Awww, got a bum bottle. Let it warm out of the fridge and it opened without and gas escaping. Poured with zero head. Color is a clear amber and no bubble trails. Flavor’s actually pretty good except for the missing carbonic tang - but smoke, malt, sweet, bitter are good..Body is good despite the barest hint of carbonation. Finish is like flavor, with only a slight hint of smoke in a diminishing role. Unfortunate.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 DocLock (6826) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 21, 2012
Bottle from Capone’s at 7% ABV. Pours turbid rusty Carolina muddy clay clored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is extremely heavy smoked malt, mild fruit, hops, and campfire smell. Tastes very smoky malty, with backup hops and a finishing tartness. Not as dense or complex as the Aecht offerings, but a solid rauchbier.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Oakes (10941) - Savusavu, FIJI ISLANDS - MAY 19, 2012
Hazy dull orangey-amber. No head. Smokey aroma is beechy with light wood oven malts. Deep smokiness - I have no idea what manuka smoke is really like so I didn’t perceive that specifically. The malts are rich if unrefined. There is probably a bit too much yeast character for my tastes. A little bit of alcoholic strength in the finish.
