A German style bock beer using our own Manuka smoked malt to give a distinctive smoke character that’s balanced out with the richness of the bock using our own yeast.

DocLock (8253) - Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 21, 2012
Bottle from Capone’s at 7% ABV. Pours turbid rusty Carolina muddy clay clored with 1-finger off-white head. Nose is extremely heavy smoked malt, mild fruit, hops, and campfire smell. Tastes very smoky malty, with backup hops and a finishing tartness. Not as dense or complex as the Aecht offerings, but a solid rauchbier.

Hazy dull orangey-amber. No head. Smokey aroma is beechy with light wood oven malts. Deep smokiness - I have no idea what manuka smoke is really like so I didn’t perceive that specifically. The malts are rich if unrefined. There is probably a bit too much yeast character for my tastes. A little bit of alcoholic strength in the finish.

bottle from knightly. warm burnt umber. served a wee bit too chilled, needs some warmth to come out. nice aroma! rich sweet hickory and applewood, dense and deliciously enticing. the flavors are spot on, with deep oily smokiness that is very satisfying. it could use a malt and body boost but otherwise this is fun! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a cloudy copper color, with a thin off-white head. Head dissipates quickly, leaving behind a fair amount of lacing. Aroma of smoked bacon, which is to say, an oaked smokiness mingled with cured meat. Taste is more complex, however, with the sweetness of buttery toffee and toasted malts mingling with a salty, smoky flavor. As the beer warms, maltiness becomes more prominent and smokiness less so. Few, if any, hops are noticeable, and the alcohol is well hidden. Mouthfeel is watery, with a moderate amount of carbonation. In conclusion: A beer that seems to split the difference between a doppelbock and rauchbier. If I didn’t know better, however, I’d say this one tilted more toward bock than smoked beer. The smoke is there, but it’s not very well defined either.

Beautiful bronze color. Nice smokey and malty aroma. Awesome smoke flavor and balance with the bock portion of the beer. Harsher than amberg smoke yet milder than peat or some of the other hardwood smoke yet unique smoke character. A beautiful and unique smoked brew.

20120408 12oz bottle from Honeygo. Hazed medium amber with thin, quick off-white head and slight lacing. Aroma is massively smoked, but I’d be lying if I said it was any different from the oak smoke I’m used to in the Schlenkerla beers. Maybe side by side I would see a differnence. This one is a lovely reproduciton of Schlenkerla marzen, with a sturdy malt backbone, notes of pretzel, lactic sourness (mild), and a mildly floral woody characteristic. Fairly well hopped with some lingering bitterness that’s nearly bark-like. largely enjoyable. Smoked is about the only way I ever want to drink a stronger lager like this.

330ml Bottle: Aroma of smoke, smoked malt, smoked meat, slight peat, and a hint of Robitussin. Poured deep amber/orange in color with a large, tan head that greatly diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer, as well as around the edges. Cloudy. Slightly sparkling. Full of medium-sized particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of malt, smoke, smoked wood, smoked meat, and wood. Medium body. Thin, then dry texture. Average carbonation. Medium sweet, malt, smoke, smoked wood, smoked meat finish is dry. 7%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

The sienna colored body was quite cloudy, with a small head despite a vigorous and fizzy carbonation upon pour. The smell of smoke hit me immediately upon pouring, and holing it up to the nose revealed the aroma quite clearly. The smoke seemed to mask other odors, but one in a while I could detect some raisins and toffee. The taste was dominated by smoke, as expected, but the other flavors like tart cherry, raisin, and brown sugar were also evident. The beer felt a little thin for a bock, but the smoky finish lingered on. A good beer to try, if you a smoked malt fan, but does not stray too far from the Bamberg formula.

330 mL bottle. Pours hazy copper with a small beige head. The aroma is caramel, smooth smoke, and heavy malts. The flavor is very sweet, with a mild smoke profile up front, and a little bitterness and spiciness in the finish. The palate is medium, a little acidic, and smooth. Overall, this is a nice, subdued smoke beer. Very nice.

ComradeK (1060) - The Vale of Dundas, AUSTRALIA - FEB 15, 2012
330ml bottle. Pours a hazy, dark copper-amber, with a large off-white head, which lasts well and leaves good lace. Smoky aromas dominate, with some bacon notes and a touch of sweet malt in the background. A faint initial sweetness leads into some peppery hops and drying woodsmoke. A touch of caramel sweetness mixes with more smoke, leading into a lingering smoky finish with some sweeter, fruity highlights. A nice smoked beer, more subtle than some others I have tried, but still enjoyable.
