A German style bock beer using our own Manuka smoked malt to give a distinctive smoke character thatís balanced out with the richness of the bock using our own yeast.

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours hazy copper with a slight, fizzy beige head. Aroma is smokey - but tolerably so. Med body - that thins quickly. Smoke is the flavor. Not bacon. Sort of mesquite. Good beer.

Bottle from Star Grocery, Berkeley. Pours reddish copper with a modest beige head that fades away and a pleasantly smoky aroma. There is a hearty smoked malt flavor (mesquite?) with a little hop bitterness. I donít usually care for smoked beers, but this one is pretty good.

bottle from GBX, shared with Tronraner. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a small white head. Not sure what manuka is, but it evidently makes for some fine malt smokiní. The smoke is prominent, meaty, and ashy. I was surprised at how it becomes even more intense in the flavor. The finish is particularly ashy in a good way. Smoked meat is up front with the bock qualities staying tasteful and in the background. This is truly delicious.

Bottle shared by NachlamSie. Pours hazy orange with small offwhite head. The aroma is subtly smoky, with some cucumber, tropical fruity, slight raisin, and a little bit of wood. The flavor is much smokier than the nose, with a nice robust meatiness with an ever so slight sharp acrid quality (I mean this in a positive way somehow). Behind the smoke are light tropical fruits and a little bit of caramelized malt. Clean finish with some lingering smoke. Pretty tasty.

Well, it sure smells smokey, as one might expect. There is a good deal of caramel and toast, as well. Smokey, meaty flavor, plus caramel, and a dryish, woody finish.

Bottle. Rich amber beer with a light tan head. Smoke and light bacon aroma. Smoke flavor with malt backing and light bacon. Medium bodied. Smoke and light bacon lingers with malt.

nearbeer (4379) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - DEC 26, 2011
33cl; 7% abv. Light haze on the deep copper-brown body, and a lasting disc of cream above. Aroma of smoked meat, caramel and maybe some wheat. Taste is smoke, aged barrel, caramel apple, spicy orange and green herbs. Medium body is well-balanced, lightly tingly, and has medium carbonation.

Bottle with Yanick. Pours amber with off white head. Nose/taste of pulled pork, smoked caramel malt, fire pit, peat, smoked wood and light charcoal. Tons of smoke - very dominate in the nose and palate. Medium body. On a side note, this is the second beer today Iíve had brewed with "manuka." Seriously.

2011 Edition. Pours a chestnut brown, pretty clear and by looks ample carbination. Delicious smokey bacon arome - absolutely beautiful and made me salivate. Flavour is malty with tonnes of smoke, although am left with a scorched flavour. I see someone else called it ash and burnt wood - good deScription. A tad too apparent for me. If I look past that bit (which I personally donít like) this is a very creative well crafted beer.

Rose gold colour with a full, enduring white head that leaves good lace. The smoked manuka is distinctive, tarry and generous. The last time I smelt this kind of smoke was attached to manuka smoked salmon. Thereís phenolics similar to peaty Islay whisky Ardbeg Uigadail. The smoke comes through richly in the flavour along with good, firm malt. Bacon-like smoke as well. This is a one time beer, not a session brew at all, but then thatís not a bad thing. Iíll be remembering drinking this for quite some time.
