3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rose gold colour with a full, enduring white head that leaves good lace. The smoked manuka is distinctive, tarry and generous. The last time I smelt this kind of smoke was attached to manuka smoked salmon. There’s phenolics similar to peaty Islay whisky Ardbeg Uigadail. The smoke comes through richly in the flavour along with good, firm malt. Bacon-like smoke as well. This is a one time beer, not a session brew at all, but then that’s not a bad thing. I’ll be remembering drinking this for quite some time.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap at Beervana. Pours a chestnut brown with a small off white head. Big smokey nose. Smoked meat and citrus with some wood and earth notes underriding it all. Caramel malts are present but a constant smokey flavour overruns that a little in the taste. Lots of ash and burnt wood notes. Solid beer

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours dark amber with a large, quickly fading head.
Nose shows prominent smoke, as in smoked meat smoke. Also some woody character. Underneath is sweet rich malt and caramel hints.
Smoke carries through as a flavour along with the caramel. Finishes weakly with a faint grainy character.
Nice moderate carbonation and rich body.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
640ml bottle. Vey skinny tan flotilla of bubbles disappearing across the surface. Iced tea colour with lots of smoke in the aroma, as you would expect. Not a lot else coming through. A very intense smokey flavour with some aniseed in the finish. Long on the palate and quite pleasant. Good mouthfeel.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with small tan coloured head. Aromas of smoke, caramel and a little toast. Smoke is no where near as dominant as expected. Flavour are more conventional. Caremel sweetness with some light smoke. Mouthfeel is on the thin side. Carbonation is light. Smoke is relatively subtle. Probably would have appreciated more if it was a bit moe assertive.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
7% version. Clear brown, puffy beige head. Medium bead. Smoke, caramel, wood, grass. Taste has caramel and honey sweetness (although I suppose the honey is just a brain misfire due to having had tea-tree honey), a touch of lager sourness and plenty of smoke. I didn’t really get any sense of bacon or ham. Slightly sticky mouthfeel. Alcohol dangerously well-hidden. Interesting smoke character adds a local touch to what is otherwise a pretty German-tasting brew. Could be more smoke and it lacks the depth of some smoked beers, but this is a solid drop.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
2010 Edition - 7% - often referred to as "that bacon beer" as the malt is smoked with manuka and a small amount of peat. This is as texturally complete as it has ever been with malty, caramel and smoke notes (less overt than in previous years).

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2009 Bottle 7%. Clear coppery amber pour with a short beige head that doesn’t last long. Quite a bit of smoke on the nose with notes of smoky bacon, toffee, vanilla and wood. Flavour is very similar but sweeter, pointing up the caramel maltiness and blending well with the smoke. Mouthfeel is slick and very light, almost watery, with fairly high carbonation and a lingering smoky, bittersweet finish. Very nice rauchbier, excellently balanced and extremely easy to drink, although the sweetness could possibly be toned down a bit.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
This one has been sitting in my fridge for a while and whilst I have expecting it to be decent and I wasn’t really getting my hopes too high. Big fat ham and bacon notes in the aroma. Taste is fairly full, follows the aroma pretty well, a little sweet for a rauchbier to me, it is not a style I drink a lot of but I think this quite a good drop.
