The detes on the version of this beer I drank are as convoluted as Hieronymus Bosch’s "The Garden of Earthly Delights". Here’s what I have been able to piece together (probably somewhat erroneously) from webpages and a video chat with Koen Hugel broadcast at Schubros Brewery in San Ramon, California. Koen is a young artisanal brewer from Kortrijk, Belgium (who parenthetically shares my disdain for beer-style "accuracy"). He made a chocolate-flavored beer called Zeven Zonden Invidia (Seven Sins Envy) which was apparently inspired by Bosch’s painting and which won a gold medal at the Brussels Beer Challenge 2015. Koen’s beer is distributed in the US by Schubros. Collaborating with Koen (Koen came to San Ramon, I think), Schubros took some Zeven Zonden Invidia and aged it for a year in cabernet-sauvignon barrels. And that’s what I was lucky enough to drink on tap in Schubros’ taproom, where it was called "Tree of Life" (another reference to Bosch’s painting?). Cab and chocolate and a whole lot of Belgian body...memorable.

I really liked this beer, a super coffee stout, powerful, yet easy drinking, lovely complexity on taste and smell, all-round superb beer, if you like alcoholic stouts

Black as night, large brownish head. Strong aroma of malt. Heavy body, average carbonation. Taste is sweet and bitter, stout.

Dark brown pour with small beige head. Amazing aroma of ripe fruits, bready, yeast, caramel. Taste of ripe fruits, plums, figs, raisins, blackberry caramel, toffee, molasses, bready, yeast. Lots going on in this one. Lower carbonation, full bodied, creamy mouthfeel. This is one delicious beer! Only thing wrong is it is slightly too sweet or it would have even scored higher in my books. Absolutely brilliant beer!!

On tap at The Olde Depot in Oakland. It pours a very dark brown/black color with a khaki head. The aroma is super fruity with plums, fig, blackberries and hard fruit candy. The flavor is divine with ultra ripe dark fruit, dates, fig, plum, blackberries, rich bread, and hard candy. Very sweet and full bodied, but with a great bready malt background that lends a lot of substance. Thick but not syrupy. Sweet yet substantial… this is the beer I imagine the monks drinking while fasting. So good! This reestablishes my faith in Belgian beers. More please.

33 cl. bottle split by 3 @ ’t Rusteel. Ruby black with a tanned head. Nose is big on sweet spices but not as heavy as the two others I tried from the series, red grapes, sugar & thick liquorish. Taste is sweet cocoa, blue + blackberries, chocolate, slight bitter chocolate, lots of berries & liquorish with some bitter herbs in the back, thick malts & solid body. Pretty interesting & solid brew.

Very dark brown with thin head. Lots of dark malts in the aroma. Flavour has lots of bittersweet malts and some fruity sugars too. There’s a constant background taste of dark chocolate. Nice.
