Oakes (7047), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Nov 25, 2000 Good flavour development. Tasty. Like those brown malts. argo0 (6334), Washington DC, USA Jan 1, 2004 Muddy brown body with minimal off-white head. Aroma is sweet, fig, caramel, raisin. Taste is medium sweet, herbal, coffee, some chocolate and raisin, light grapefruit, finishing roasty coffee. Medium body that works well with the flavor. Pleasant, rather drinkable beer. Rastacouere (5421), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Dec 29, 2005 Updated: Dec 30, 2005Orange reflects trail over the deep shaded brown body. It forms a nice 1-inch cover that diminishes, but lasts congruously and not without lacing. A gratifying nose of fresh ingredients shows a remarkable natural balance. Well blended leafy, minty, woody hops enliven the delicate malts creating nut oils, soil/root and fruit (hard to pick out individual subspecies) flavors. Harmonious mouth deployment, the roastiness growing to contentment towards the finish, overshadowing the initial caramelly feel and limiting apparent sweetness by a comfortable dose of bitterness. Very well produced, it escapes all the traps (astringence avoided by a well rounded, soft mouthfeel accentuated by engaging carbonation, no metallic nor mineral character but a subtle hop derived saltiness, nor over-agressive bitterness/acidity/sweetness). Dangerously easy to drink, this is a long distance runner that watches for the tight corners. duff (5407), Sydney, Australia, Surrey, England Aug 22, 2005 Bottle. Nice American style brown ale. By American i mean more hoppy. Nice light caramel/choc/roasted malt, some light nutty characters. Flowery hops in the finish, nice length of flavour, while being quite light, nice. muzzlehatch (4429), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jun 26, 2002 Ok, guess I’m spoiler on this one. Have to say upfront that I didn’t have a whole bottle or pint, just part of my brother’s. I found it nice and malty-sweet, and yes it gets tougher at the end and has a nice color; but all in all it just didn’t seem to have a lot of character to me, sorry. Perhaps I’ll try it again if I can get an Ipswich sampler, though.
