JugOPunch (74), leominster, Massachusetts, USA Sep 27, 2006 12oz bottle: Pours a muddy brown with a nice crusty head that dissipates. Aroma is a pleasant mix between piney hops and biscuit malt. The flavor is much of the same but with a nice spicy underbelly. The body is medium and slightly creamy with a soft mouthfeel. This is delicious. I’ve found my new Autumn session brew.
Dorwart (1598), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Apr 5, 2008 Thin head of fine bubbles that dissipate quickly. Nice malty aroma with some light citrus hops, caramel and toasted bread. Color is a dark copper brown. Bitter flavor with some tea leaves, roasted grains, piney hops and grapefruit rind. Lingering dry bitterness. Kind of chalky. Finishes dry and bitter with a bit of harsh roasted flavors lingering. An ok IPA. This may have been better when it was fresh. Hugerat (418), somerville, Massachusetts, USA Nov 25, 2007 Ipswich doesn’t get nearly enough credit. This beer definitely grows on you. Very complex hop profile. Initialy you get freshly mown grass and wet hay, but there’s also plenty of citrus and pine flavors. Good malt body behind it really makes for a nice beer. Rastacouere (5258), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Nov 16, 2007 Hazy dark copper, certainly darker than one would expect. A light off-white head tops it all and stays there. Quite aromatic, but not necessarily exciting hop varieties. A strong leafy, bordering earthy hoppiness dominates the lightly toasty malts. Easy-going and not very complex at all. Kinda juicy all throughout. Light-medium bodied, gentle carbonation. Right on. MartinT (4307), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 11, 2007 My Bottom Line:
The complex hoppiness within this IPA offers earthy, citrusy, wooden and orangey notes, all leading to a muscular coniferous and resinous bitterness which cannot be balanced out by the friendly bready malts. But that’s not the purpose, is it?
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the hazy amber.
-Mouthfeel is rather comfortable, increasing the level of drinkability.
-The complex hoppiness remains approachable throughout, although that finish might be a tad abrasive for those not used to this style.
-I would have liked a bit more malt complexity for a 6% IPA, but that’s just me.
Bottle. jjpm74 (2878), Connecticut, USA Oct 24, 2007 Updated: Oct 27, 2007Pours copper with a decent white head. Smells resiny and spicy with some crassy elements and hints of citrus. Tastes of pilsner malt, spice and some pepper with an earthy finish. This just hit the shelves locally, but tasted like it might have been old stock. Update 10/27/07: Purchased a second sixer of this in a different part of the state which is serviced by a different distributor. Same flavors and aroma picked up from the earlier sample. This falls somewhere between their IPA and their EPA on the hoppiness to maltiness scale.
