Roasted malt, mild hoppiness. Slightly burnt flavor. Some coffee notes. Pretty tasty but nothing spectacular. mkobes (2104), paramus, New Jersey, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Feb 20, 2005 Bottle. Deep dark brown with a light brown rich head. Aroma of American hops and roasted barley. Flavor has a big hop bitterness ad flavor component. Roasty as well. Some bittersweet chocolate. Smooth malt underneath. I can see inconsistancies coming from BC, but this to me is a very good Stout. spikee (96), Providence, Rhode Island, USA
| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 1/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 19, 2005 Aroma is seriously lacking - not much to speak of. Smells a touch like chemicals of some sort with a metallic hint. Pours a dark, velvety black with slight hints of purple. Zero head and very light lacing. Full-on burnt coffee and chocolate taste. The finish is a bit like the nose - a little too burnt with a roasted maltiness that seems somehow artificial. Good, though not great. Would buy again, but it wouldn’t necessarily be my first choice. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Dec 16, 2004 Updated: Mar 16, 2005There’s a strong burnt nose in this beer. It has a strong burnt, lightly paint, and strongly medicine taste and mouthfeel. You know, this is a pretty standard micro stout - over-burnt but, of course, rather respectable. Oh yeah, there’s some dark chocolate in there too. cfranz (261), Acton, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Dec 7, 2004 Poured a rich dark black, velvety, impenetrable and almost purple. Had a luscious brown foamy head. Dark burnt espresso/chocolate smell. Pretty rich, a nice all around stout. Only quam I have is that it was lacking just a little in complexity in flavor - I just might have to let a bottle sit for a long while and try it again later. | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 28, 2004 Color: a solid black, head: large, toasted brown, soon to settle. Aroma: richly roasted, peppery, dark and bitter.
A rush of lush, lovely bitterness presents itself on first sip, and has a short, but pleasant stay on the palate. Full bodied, perfectly balanced, a tasty and well-made stout. I was searching for something else in flavor, and came up lacking. Seemed a bit limp at times, when I was up for a challenge.
And how is this "the Original American Ale?" Did it bubble out of a brew kettle at Plymouth Rock?
