4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle, bottled on 10/24/12. Black pour, brown foam. Aroma of toasted oats, roasted barley malts, some coffee, dark chocolate, and licorice. Tastes of dark fruits and bitter chocolate. Burnt grains and pine resin bitterness finish off the palate. Creamy , oily texture. Loads of roast character. Very well made beer. Extremely affordable. Delicious Stout!

Great stout, strong chocolate/espresso in the nose. Roasted malt really comes through on the palate. Smooth after taste. Good beer

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a near black color with a moderate tan head. Nose has some roasting elements to it with a grainy nose. Toast is similar, with the roasting coming through more often. Not bad.

12 ounce bottle in a tulip glass. This one was a sleeper that sneaked up on me. I havenít heard much about Ipswich, but given the high quality and approachable price tag on their stout, Iím anxious to try their lineup. The only thing holding this beer back in the ratings was its liquidy body. If they added a little more heft to it, Iíd given it an A grade. As is, though, it has a chocolate, coffee, and smoke aroma. Taste is more of the same with some black licorice added in. Appearance is an opaque black with a dark brown layer of foam on top, practically no lacing. Palate was light bodied and watery despite the heavy, smoked flavor aspects. Overall, a traditional beer thatís well executed and definitely worth a try.

Solid take ont he style. More robust than average, nice thickness but also slick on the tongue. Dark fruits, slight smoke, coffee, caramel. Nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Dark, dark brown, practically black. Medium brown head. Aroma is smooth and rich, sweet, and almost seems like vanilla has something to do with this. Vanilla and an almost sour grain character first invades the flavor, with light chocolate. Itís almost flat on the palate (dull that is), leading to a finish that seems very much like what youíd expect from an oatmeal stout. Nothing offensive. Very clean, well-balanced.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours from the 22 oz. bomber a cola-like black with a thick, foamy, fluffy 3 finger beige head that slowly settles to a very thick collar. Aroma brings notes of chocolate, coffee, vanilla, smoke, with a touch of hop spicey-ness! 1st sip brings a medium bitterness of unsweetened chocolate & coffee. The body is on the lighter side, with a somewhat thin texture and a bitter finish. Overall, a very good Oatmeal Stout...iíll be picking this one up again soon!

Put off by the purple packaging, I was thoroughly surprised by this phenomenally easy drinking stout. Somewhere between, but carrying the better balances of a oatmeal and milk stout, this one truly delivered. If I see it again, I will gladly buy it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Impressive stout -- truly stout. Oatmeal is present but not overwhelming making the beer comfortably between sweet and dry. Enjoyed on cask.

Oatmeal Stout 7% abv.
Black-purple like blackberry, opaque,
Assertive and delicious coffee aroma.
Full body and intense flavors all the way to the bittersweet end. Smooth but also crisp, verging on silky towards the end.
Bitter character but abundant malt reduces that to medium, very good balance, long on palate, bitter, balanced aftertaste.
Dark roast black coffee, expresso really.
