UPDATED: JUN 4, 2011 I grew up in Pittsburgh, and this was the first beer that I was probably ever allowed to taste. If only I had something to compare it with at the time... Compared to nationwide macro brews, Iron City has more flavor, not extremely malty or bitter, but light and balanced without being watery.

Goes great with a Bucs, Stillers or Pens game. It's not a great beer, but certainly more interesting than any of the mass produced lagers. I generally wouldn't purchase it at anything but a game in the 'Burgh for nostalgia's sake, but certainly before Bud, Bud Lite or Miller Lite.

I like stouts and ales. Lagers are cheap and thats how they taste thin and cheap. But I prefer Iron to Bud and the other lagers in the same price point.

I hadn’t tried an "IC" since I used to make the Pirates games in the 70s ( mostly for the tail-gaters and bars). Iron City was everywhere in those days..hard to find a corner pub in the Penn state where either this or Rolling rock wasn’t on tap.
This new packaging may be an attempt to revive sales and position IC for national distribution. It is one of the better American Macros.
Poured a crystal clear gold with a smallish rocky cap that vanishes quickly to a small ring and light lace. Moderate carbonation is welcome in these macro pale adjunct lagers. Nose picks up a strong, grainy, boiled husk aroma and vegital adjuct smells with olfactions of dextrin sweetness. Mouth feel rather watery, distinct grainy husk/corn grit tastes ...sweet, mealy but thin on malt...light dry finish with the green, dry burn you get with rice in a beer. The hops are non distinct in the falvor profile until the finish where they appear as a light citrus note.
Good stuff to wash your teeth with watching a live sports event but you’d have to be a real tar to actually buy it to enjoy at a pub or at home.

Metal bottle from the LCBO- Pours a sparkling gold body, with a foamy white head. Aromas are some malt, cardboard, papery. Taste is sweet, off caramel flavours, paper. FInish is somewhat bitter. Slight metallic aftertaste. Ok.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2006 In the bottle at Green Life Grocery, Asheville, NC. I was so psyched to score IC on my NC trip TC (This Christmas). I was first introduced to Iron City and its horror-child counterpart, IC Light, when I would roadtrip to Pittsburgh to watch my beloved Reds kick some Buc at Three Rivers. Sometimes you just have to wax nostalgic about an old friend. I was once so crunked on this stuff by the 9th Inning that I almost forgot to yell obsenities at Barry Bonds. Iron City is Pittsburgh. She ain’t too pretty, but she sure can count.
UPDATE: 1/25/6 Just had my first Iron City from the "Canottle." The packaging is now way better than the beer. No one at the table could dent this can it was so thick. Iron City is still pale yellow, still grainy and watery, still light, still benign. PLAY BALL!
