Variety is the spice of life. Every once-in-a-while, you’ve gotta mix things up. Our catalyst for such an excursion out of the ordinary is, um, actually spice. Spice of Life uses traditional brewing spices in a way few dare to. Forsaking traditional ideas of subtlety and cowardly “Pinch of This, Pinch of That” brewing techniques, we embrace the flavors and launch them into a full frontal assault of delicious bitter orange peel and grains of paradise. Beautifully smooth coriander compliments and orange peel perfectly.

Pint glass night at eastbound. Pours hazy yellow with a fluffy head. Aromas were spicy as expected. Decent too. The flavor was hoppier than I had expected. I got more of a Belgian IPA vibe than others’ saison vibe but I can see that too. No bad.

Amber clarity thick white head with champagne like bubbles...which bring out nice spice and phenolics. Saison like with great balance of orange zest and coriander. I like the style! Of pinch here and pinch there finishes dry. Great!

750, capped. Thanks, A! Pours a murky dark amber with a dense and creamy tan head that settles fairly quickly away. Big tangy sweet nose, lots of cloying oranges and orange juice in the aromatics. Kind of a boiled herbs quality there, too--sticky sweet but herbal and plantlike. Sticky body on the high side of medium. Oranges and weird boiled herbs on the mid palate. Sweet caramel unfermented malt sugars under that. Long sweet finish. Smells and tastes very interesting at first but after a few sips it gets to be too much pretty quickly.

March 15th, 2013 - There’s only one other review for this? It must have been another Ratebeerian at the San Diego Epic Beer Festival where I stumbled upon this tropical treat. The aroma is hard to glean off the taster glass, but I think I’m getting ephemeral and elusive qualities, a bit like a saison. The taste is clearer, presenting a soft palate that’s light to the touch, and brings a bit of white grape juice, clean cotton and cotton candy to bear. It’s a bit light, especially given the crowded tasting schedule for the day, but quite lovely, even I if I’m not catching the glint of lime.

750ml bottle - Aroma - copious orange peel, caramel malts, and floral Appearance - hazy amber body, sturdy 3-finger head, average retention/lacing Mouthfeel - medium/full bodied, medium carbonation Flavor - starts out fruity, noticeable toasted malts and spice Overall - 3rd beer from Iron Fist and it’s another winner. Perhaps a little pricey and it keeps it from getting another tick higher, but it’s a quality beer

"A nice spicy saison style brew...one of their tastier brews, though it still seems to be lacking focus. the kaffir lime leaf version of this brew was pretty nice."
