COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Variety is the spice of life. Every once-in-a-while, you’ve gotta mix things up. Our catalyst for such an excursion out of the ordinary is, um, actually spice. Spice of Life uses traditional brewing spices in a way few dare to. Forsaking traditional ideas of subtlety and cowardly “Pinch of This, Pinch of That” brewing techniques, we embrace the flavors and launch them into a full frontal assault of delicious bitter orange peel and grains of paradise. Beautifully smooth coriander compliments and orange peel perfectly.

750ml bottle - Aroma - copious orange peel, caramel malts, and floral Appearance - hazy amber body, sturdy 3-finger head, average retention/lacing Mouthfeel - medium/full bodied, medium carbonation Flavor - starts out fruity, noticeable toasted malts and spice Overall - 3rd beer from Iron Fist and it’s another winner. Perhaps a little pricey and it keeps it from getting another tick higher, but it’s a quality beer

750ml bottle from Bev4less. Pours a hazy roan brown with a big off-white head that has fair retention and ample lacing. The aroma is mild with spices, white fruits and sweet malts. The flavor is delicate with multilayer spices, oranges and orange juice. The palate is somewhat thin and watery with soft carbonation. Finishes weak and short. Overall: Nice flavor, but this falls apart with poor palate and no finish. Once again this brewery underwhelms, I hope they pick up the slack and brew something bold.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Poured a dark golden honey color and created a minimal amount of foamy head. In the nose there is an abundance of coriander, orange peel and the spice grains of paradise which smells delicious and made my salivary glands start up right away. Actually smells similar to a true authentic Belgian witbier style. The flavor is the same high dosage of all the same elements and is just completely dominated by the grains of paradise and coriander. Also, there is a sweet and tart flavor of orange peels and has the same taste as the flesh of a tangerine. There is a little bit of a imbalance going on within this brew but since this was my first beer by Iron Fist, I have to admit that I’m impressed.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAR 6, 2011
Appearance: swirls with filmy bubbles atop a bright amber-orange body. Mostly clear but with a faint chill haze.
Nose: clean spiced character is pervasively seductive. Crunchy caramelized sweetness in the back rides atop crisp golden melba toast. Forestry. Potpourri underneath with floral and herbal qualities. Canned black cherries and mulberries for a bit of wild mustiness. Tobacco leaf underneath along with parchment paper. Complex and evolving.
Palate: clean with a medium-bodied weight and a dry finish. Leafy, dried herbs, parchment paper and dried tobacco leaf. Apple sweetness then bitterness of skin and nutty earthiness of stem. Solid warmth and spice in swallow and breath. Dried brush old and crumbly. Ginger and powdered cumin mingle with a mélange of floral and herbal notes.
Final Thoughts: easily for me the most intriguing beer of our mini-tasting. Never once was a single sip same as the next nor the previous. A truly amazing and evolving beer. I’d easily drink another.
