You know the expression, "A Velvet Glove and an Iron Fist"? It was coined to refer to a regime that used a soft exterior to hide its punishingly unforgiving nature. This seems an apt description for our Velvet Glove. Its placid appearance and unparalleled smoothness hide the truth; this is one fiendishly strong stout. Rich, chocolaty espresso dominates the flavor profile, with a velvety smooth texture that will haunt your senses.

Aroma of toffee, licorice, and dark chocolate. Pours thick and black with no head or carbonation. Taste is heavy on licorice chocolate with a sweet roasty finish.

Pint at Gallo’s Tap Room on 9/12/12. Darkest brown pour with a thin tan head. Malty nose with notes of licorice and metal. Malty flavor with licorice and chocolate before a roasty coffee finish.

Pours super dark with a nice 2 finger reddish brown head. Aroma is underwhelming, some hints of raisins and licorice, no chocolate or coffee notes. Flavor isn’t that great either, atleast not for an impy stout, very weak, lots of dark malts, but its like a watery chocolate flavor, can’t taste the high abv. Not a bad beer, but its a horrible example of an imperial stout.

Bottle shared by my buddy Ian. Dark creamy pour, thin brown head. Aroma has sweet hints of dark bitter chocolate and slight coffee bean. Flavor is very malt forward. Nice chocolate flavor and a bitter finish.

750 ml bottle from Bevmo Valencia. Nose is chocolate, roast, espresso, and a hint of smokiness. Black with a big, long lasting, heavy lacing cinnamon head. Flavor is chocolate, a hint of bitterness, sweetness, raisins, and very light alcohol warmth. Very good, smooth drinking stout.

750 ml bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stayed around a while. There’s also a good amount of lacing. Aroma is nice, it smells like roasted malt, dark fruit, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and some burnt/charred malt. Taste is mostly just like the aroma but the flavors seem stronger in comparison, and there’s also the addition of some anise. There’s a nice balance between the sweet and bitter flavors in this stout. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s creamy with good carbonation. This is the first Iron Fist beer I’ve had (since I think they’re new to Ohio), and I thought it was good. I’ll have to pick up some of their other brews now. $9.99 a bottle.

Bottle from South Bay Drugs: Created a bubbly patch of foamed head where as the liquid was a solid jet black. In the nose, there is a roasty combination of dark chocolate malts paired with freshly ground coffee bean. The flavor has a deep roast profile that brings out nicely blackened malts that give off notes of chocolate, but somehow this stout falls short in my book. Still an enjoyable brew but there was a faint background of sour milk or half and half creamer.

Pours almost black in the glass with a silky pour. It has light brown head. Aroma has sweet chocolate with some coffee. Taste has caramel and toffee up front then cocoa and vanilla follows. Long smooth finish.

Tap. Pours a black color with a tan head. Aroma is of darker and sweeter chocolate, oats, roasted malt, coffee and dark caramel. The flavor follows the nose with lots of oats and almost milky notes because of the massive use of oats, roasted malt, dark and sweeter chocolate, dark caramel and coffee. The body is medium with a really silky and creamy mouth feel. Overall a really nice Imperial Oatmeal Stout!
