You know the expression, "A Velvet Glove and an Iron Fist"? It was coined to refer to a regime that used a soft exterior to hide its punishingly unforgiving nature. This seems an apt description for our Velvet Glove. Its placid appearance and unparalleled smoothness hide the truth; this is one fiendishly strong stout. Rich, chocolaty espresso dominates the flavor profile, with a velvety smooth texture that will haunt your senses.

Well executed imperial stout! Onyx pour with a tightly packed latte head. Mahogany around the very out rim, a sliver really. Otherwise, not a hint of light made it through this beer’s viscous body. Brownie batter, cocoa, fudge, hint of coffee, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. Mouthfeel reminiscent of the name...a velvet glove. Solid!

Aroma:Chocolate and raspberry. Appearance: Black. opaque with a thin but lasting reddish brown head. Flavor: Malty, roasted grain, coffee. Palate: Velvet is the perfect description. Viscous, low carbonation, smooth with a long chocolate finish. Overall: Well done. I have never had a beer so thick without being cloyingly sweet.

750 ml bottle. Pours a pure jet black color with a small brown head. A rich nose of dark fruit and coffee some ash. A rich flavor mostly dominated by dark fruit, light smoky ash, some metallic roast, a sweet syrupy nature, a slick palate. Quite nice.

Poured into a perfect pint. 2.0 A: Black color. Aggressive pour gave just a touch of head that didn’t last long. 3.5 S: This one has a strong cherry vibe going on. Chocolate covered cherries to be exact. Formitable roastiness, notes of coffee, molasses, and caramel. Smells like a prototypical stout except for the emphasis on cherry and chocolate. There’s also some mineral aroma in this, like in an English stout. 3.25 T: Taste is much like the nose. Chocolate and cherry are the focus with coffee, molasses, caramel, and rich neutral maltiness. Moderate roastiness with a light acridity. Overall, not bad, but nothing special. 3.5 M: Heavier body. Carbonation is far too low. Otherwise, this has a very nice velvety viscousness to it. With proper carbonation, this could easily be a 5.0 here. 3.25 D: Decent attempt. With more carbonation, I could see this being a pretty good beer. However, this is too pricey at $10 for the 750ml. 750mL bottle pours with a pure darkness supporting a mocha colored head of foam. The aroma offers up big black licorice, lots of chocolate, some molasses and some dark roasted malts. The taste is indeed velvety smooth with rich dark chocolate goodness and then it gets into more chocolate, some dark roasted malts and ribbons of spicy black licorice knitted about ribbons of sweet molasses. Great stuff.
