You know the expression, "A Velvet Glove and an Iron Fist"? It was coined to refer to a regime that used a soft exterior to hide its punishingly unforgiving nature. This seems an apt description for our Velvet Glove. Its placid appearance and unparalleled smoothness hide the truth; this is one fiendishly strong stout. Rich, chocolaty espresso dominates the flavor profile, with a velvety smooth texture that will haunt your senses.

Keg at Capital Ale House Innsbrook. Pours a dark brown with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, leather, smoke, tinny hops. The taste is chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits, raisin, citrus hops. Medium bodied mild lingering bitterness.

UPDATED: JUN 23, 2015 Growler thanks to Eugene. Clear dark ruby-highlighted brown, minimal head. Sweet, graham cracker with roasty, balanced finish. Lasting bitterness mixed with lingering sweetness. Not quite an iron fist / velvet glove combo, but maybe a ... brass knuckles / soft winter glove? Okay, nothing too exciting but not gross. [7/4/7/4/14]

Blind RIS experiment [Sample 9/20, 4/17/2015] Dark brown pour, nearly black (the usual color. I can pretty much stop commenting on this aspect I think). Brown head, moderate duration, some sorta lacing. Aroma starts full of chocolate, but is quickly followed with astringent slightly sour cherries in a metal can. In the mouth thereís a somewhat ashy roast. In my mouth itís chalky and astringent. Surprisingly dry, given my expectation based on the chocolate nose. Harsh alcohol presence in both taste and feel as it warms. Overall: Middle of the road, excepting the astringent metal. Which is not good. Not a fan.

Guess: No idea, hope itís not one of my regulars though.
Would pay: $0.

Black as tar with a generous coffee coloured head. Aromas of roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, vanilla, leather and licorice dominate. It actually smells like itís been aged in bourbon barrels too, with tannic oak notes and the bourbon sweetness. The taste has a lot of licorice, treacle, dark chocolate and leather. Only a bit of espresso. Charred meat in the finish. I still canít shake the impression that this is barrel aged although I know itís not. Full bodied and, as the label promises, velvety smooth with a little bit of prickly carbonation as well. Fantastic imperial stout, provided it isnít consumed too cold.

Draft at Uber, Seattle. Thick black-brown, dark brown head. Pretty, and a smooth sip. Roasty grain. Tasty, medium body as these big RIS go. Very solid and tasty.

Bottle at home. Black beer with a brown head. Coffee, chocolate, tar and licorice aroma. Coffee, vanilla, licorice, leather and smoked flavour. A bit too much leatherflavour for me.
