Ah ‘The Impaler’. This, not-too-over-the-top, imperial holds a special place in our hearts. It was our first big-boy brew. The Impaler comes from down under and hits you in the nose first with a fistful of Galaxy hop aroma and then follows up with a strong malt profile. Despite its name the Impaler’s malt perfectly balances the alcohol and the hops giving only the slightest suggestion of its double nature.

Shaker pint draft at the Iron Goat tasting room in Spokane, Washington. The pour is clear amber with a smallish off white head. The aroma is tame sweet malt along with floral hop character. The taste is a balance between caramel fruit sweet malt and the floral hop, which also expresses some pine in the flavor. The palate is medium bodied with soft carbonation and a dry softly bitter finish. Solid Double IPA.

Draught in a flight at the brewpub. Pours a moderately hazy amber color. Nose on this is much more malt forward, with a smell of grains, and very little hops. Taste is also malt-forward, though it is moderately bitter and with a bite to it.

At the brewery, deep reddish orange color. Nice lacing. Nose is hops, sweet citrus, dry grass. Nice balanced hop/citrus/sweet attack. Good smooth lingering finish.

Tap at the brewery. The Head Butt is better. Dark amber, this beer seems to be grasping for flavor with darker roasted malt instead of more body. There was an off flavor as well.
