Tap at Wilmington location. Told it was a Saison Noir? More likely it is this. Pours a nice dark near black color with a nice thin gray khaki head- good lace. Aroma is nutty roasty malts, burn t leather, some dark chocolate, burnt toast, light fruitness and phenolic grassy hints. Flavor is big black dark chocolate with medium roast, clean - almsot lager like with slight phenolics, yeasty belgian character, slight spearmint- and even a hint of anise as it warms slightly, grass, dry toasty finish- low sweetness throughout- clean and very well made. Good stuff.

On tap at Newark Brewpub. Pours a deep clear amber with a thin off white foamy head and light lacing. Aroma has some faint roastiness and bittersweet chocolate along with a touch of fruitiness. Bittersweet chocolate and gently roasted coffee are the main flavors with some fruity esters from the yeast. Some bittering hops allow for a smooth, roasted transition in the finish. A medium body with soft carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel.

On draft at the Newark location. Aroma and flavor were chocolate, roast, some smoky ash, molasses (think Pig Iron), slightly bitter roast, phenolic yeast character. The blend of flavors didn’t work great for me, seemingly better as the straight Pig Iron Porter or a Belgian brew. Mouthfeel was full, mildly carbonated.

Served on draft at the brewpub. Pours a near black color with a thin frothy dark tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of smoke, roasted malts and a yeasty note. The taste is intense roasted malts, leather, smoke, peppery and spicy notes, stone fruits, berries and leafy, earthy hops. Medium-full bodied. Nice balance. A home run... I’d have gotten a growler of this to go if not for the two’s inane laws....
