3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 pilgrimoutlaw (494) - Wayne, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 25, 2013On tap at Iron Hill Chestnut Hill. Pours cloudy brown with thin tan head. Aroma of caramel, tea, some fruit. Syrupy sweetness. Smooth medium/heavy body. More like an abbey dubbel than a bier de garde to me. A bit disappointing.

At the Iron Hill Belgium Comes to West Chester event. A bit bready, but in general really muted with a light body. Tastes a bit like white bread soaked in water alongside some mildly toasted malt. Too tame.

Pours a honey color with a medium white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma is slightly perfumey with boozy leathery notes and some caramel and honey. Flavor has caramel and some spicy/perfumey notes...slight boozy leather and flowers. Mouthfeel is medium and lively with a perfumey lingering finish.

From 750 mL bottle, courtesy of dpjuart. Malty nose with some molasses and raw grain, oaky notes and some red wine tannins. Very light hops. Little bit of graham cracker and rubber. Dark orange-amber, not quite brown. Clear with a bit of murky quality, topped with creamy-foamy off-white lacing head. Medium body with high carbonation (foamed when opened). Starts sweet with lots of malt character, molasses and graham crackers. Raw grain and some dusty quality. A bit of rubber and oxidation, but not too off-putting. Quite reminiscent of the true French styles, just a bit too sweet.

12 oz draft at IH in Lancaster. The stats of this (ABV etc.) seem slightly different from the ones listed on the menu. Pour is a bronze with two fingers of off-white head. Nose is caramel, malt, light spice, light yeast and grapes. Taste is just as the nose indicates, but instead of tasting grape, I pick up slight apples. The finish is really nice on this one as well; it is a tart caramel and earth with just a hint of spice. It has kind of a "dirty" palate, like Scottish ales do. This one was tasty if you’re a malt guy!
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 beerbill (3044) - Laurel, New York, USA - FEB 4, 2010
750 ml bottle shared with my wife. Bottle purchased at the Lancaster, PA location last Summer. Pours a hazy deep reddish amber with a moderate off-white head that lasted through mid-glass and left partial lace. Pleasant aroma of malt, sweet caramel and orange peel. The flavor is malt, caramel, apples, peaches, and orange peel. Very fruity and somewhat sweet. Very lively effervescence; I can feel what seems like an abundance of tiny bubbles on my palate, yet there is very little activity in my glass. Not really what I think of in a Biere de Garde, but quite enjoyable as it is.

Draft at IH Lancaster. Dark amber in color with a sweet malty aroma. Flavor is very smooth and candied, malty with hints of caramel

Out of a 750ml bottle. Pours a hazy plum-tinted amber with a really creamy persistent head. Aroma is first of wild bretty yeast, elvolving in a really interesting way to bready, fruity malt. Strawberries and caramel. Extremely full flavor palate, with lots of red fruits and a really strong bready, cookie like quality. A touch funky for sure, but not particularly sour. Thanks bro for the bottle. A nice experiment, very hearty and a touch wild.

Split a growler with afire from Lancaster. Dark amber pour like a plum color with small off-white head. Some fruit aroma with a nice mellow malt character on the pallet. Like a dark plum beer with minimal hops and a smooth dominate bread malt flavor, I would take this farmhouse style over the Biere De Or.
