The nose had a nice mix of roast, chocolate, and peppers. Really reminded me of a cayenne pepper chocolate candy I had once. The flavor started out pretty much like the average Porter, and it wasn’t till the finish where the pepper spiciness really came out. Chocolate and hot peppers is just a match made in heaven. Though I will say that the peppers didn’t bring near enough heat for me to guess that they were habanero, it really tasted like cayenne. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate fizzy carbonation. Overall, a pretty nice beer. Up there among the best chili pepper beers I’ve had.
theisti (953), Leawood, Kansas, USA May 27, 2008 Shaker pint, draft at the brewpub. Pour is dark brown with a nice tan head. Aroma is really interesting, a very full roast, sweet chocolate and spicy pepper nose. Despite the differences of these three aromas, they blended together really nicely in the nose. Taste was nice full bodied roast Porter, with Habanero spiciness coming on in the middle and finish. As with the nose, the spiciness melded nicely with the roast and dark chocolate notes of the porter. Palate is medium, with the peppers drying it out quite a bit. I paired this beer with a spicy dish and it worked really well. Nicely done! puzzl (1627), New York, New York, USA Apr 15, 2008 From a hand-bottle shared by EDA. Word. Delicious aroma, brown malts and a fine spicy had aroma behind. Not dominant at all but perfectly complimenting the beer. Flavor has spice at the finish, though is a bit thin in body. A little roast and peanut present. Very enjoyable. Could’ve used a touch more habanero flavor. CharlesDarwin (1315), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 6, 2008 12oz handbottle, thanks to acrdz. Aroma is distinct in having that peculiar half-cooked pepper pith ester/phenol/rubber character. This turns me off. Since I know where it’s coming from, I’m not as disturbed by it as I would normally be. Pours a deeper brown, with little head. Flavor is interesting, mostly a really chocolate heavy porter backed with a finishing flash of heat and spice in the backend. The porter base is nice, but some parts of Habanero confuse it. The heat is clean and fleeting. Body is rather dry, but carries the heat well. Interesting. Not particularly complex. ryan (1652), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Apr 5, 2008 Courtesy of arcdr. Dark brown body with a tiny beige head. Sweet, toffee, raisin nose with some milk chocolate and cola. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter with peppers, some green fleshy pepper, toffee and milk chocolate. Medium body is round with light carbonation. Finishes with a lasting heat.
