4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (5562) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - AUG 15, 2011
In short: An intense, oaky, tannic and slightly sour strong amber ale with a ton of cherries. Excellent sipper
How: Bottle 750ml shared at RBSG 2011 grand tasting
The look: Cloudy dark-amber body topped by a medium off-white head with good retention
In long: Nose is powerful, a bit wild/farmhouse, lots of cherries. Taste is sharp and very tannic, fresh red cherries, oaky sourness, some darker fruits. A bit sweeet at first but finish is abruptly saliva sucking. Alcohol absurdly well hidden. This is classified here on ratebeer as an Abt but the flavor profile is more like a Flemish Sour on steroids with extra cherries. Another strong big strong ale durign a big beer day. A very nice beer I was able to enjoy during the kick-ass Ratebeer Summer Gathering week-end. To me, the existence of the annual RBSG is the one proof that the internet can be used for more than watching porn, illegally downloading music & movies and watching videos of cute kittens doing adorable things.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sebletitje (5416) - Enghien, BELGIUM - APR 21, 2010
Bottle @ Miami Fandango ’10 gathering. courtesy of gunhaver.
pours dark amber, no head.
Aroma, lots of cherry and oak with a touch of dark malts and candi sugar sweetness.
Flavors, let this one warmed up a little bit and got a lot of oak with warming abv. Thick cherry, borderline on the black currants, hints of chocolate malts, Belgian yeast and dark sugar. Cherry tart aspect was rather thin possibly making room for the sweeter sugary palate. Finish keeps the same oaky notes and a long enjoyable cherry palate.
