Ridiculously strong Belgian abbey-style ale.

On tap at Maple Shade Iron Hill.

A: Murky brown body with a light tan head.

S: Light sweetness coming through, light sugar and fruit notes. Not as strong as I would have liked and not too appealing.

T: Malty and sweet fruits with some sugar, but not nearly as sweet as expected, a very thin on flavor in comparison to things like Abt 12.

M: Full bodied, light fizzy carbonation.

O: Nothing to compare to real Belgian quads, this is just too thin and bland in comparison. It was a big disappointment really.

Pour is dark red/brown with a thin white head. Aroma is very sweet with notes of cherries, plums, and belgian yeast. Flavor is sweet as well with huge notes of candied sugar, bananas, and a slight spice finish. Not very well balanced, but if you are a fan of sweet beers then this is worth a try.

Bottle thanks to Crusianbeer. Pours a dark amber with beige head. Isn’t much to the aroma, faint tart and malt, faint hints of maple. Flavor is sweet and bold with notes of sweet maltiness, spice, faint hints of maple and woody notes with subtle dark fruit. Heavy body with low carbonation....good stuff!

bottle... dark brown with a bit of amber, not much of a head... the aroma is mostly sweet, sugar, molasses, a bit of spice... tastes good but super sweet a touch unbalanced, super easy to drink and one of the best American quads I’ve had

First of all, I love the bottle- it’s nice to see an american brewer paying homage to the Trappist look of a BDSA, they are after all better than all American examples I’ve had (including 3 philosophers and Allagash 4). Anyway, this is deep amber with a tan had that eventually fades. It looks thick. Aroma is mildly spicy and fruity. Body is "truly thick" as the bottle indicates, unlike some Trappists which are deceptively thin. I’d say that this quad is unique in that it is the only successful thick quad that I’ve thought to be very well crafted- it’s also the highest abv quad that I’ve really liked. Flavor is sweet, but clean and restrained just enough not to be cloying, even in the hot month of August. I get a nice blend of dates and, perhaps slightly less, of cherry. Slightly spicy, but not bready, with just a touch of zesty bitterness buried in there (50 IBU’s, woah!). The version I had is OG 1.113, TG 1.020, ABV 12.5, which is different than the stats listed here.

On tap North Wales. Okay our server said it was a particularly sweet batch. This one was ready fruity and strong in the plum department. Not my favorite quad flavor. Just okay.

Very impressive right off the bat. The aroma brings you straight to a desert beer. Don’t try to drink this one with dinner. Skip the fried appetizer that takes away all the room in your stomach and order the birthday cake icecream (Iron Hill Wilmington) and get a glass of this. The surprisingly light for 10.5% but don’t be fooled by the sweet tangy candy like flavor. This will drop you on the ground eventually.

75cl traded bottle. Sugary sweet? Most definitely. Big alcohol tones? Not really. Okay, but pretty simple overall.
