(Hand bottle 33 cl) Courtesy of Kramer 17801. Black and almost opaque - there’s a vague reddish hue - with a light brown head. Sweetish aroma of burned malt and some licorice. Very full-bodied with lots of roasted malt, a lightly burned edge but otherwise dominated by sweet, English licorice and some whiffs of coffee. Very subdued bitterness. 8/3/8/3/16=3.8 090407 nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA

The aroma is very big on coffee and roasty, burnt grain notes. It’s very coffee-like in fact so much that if there is any chocolate aroma it is buried in the coffee and roast. It poured a very dark brown and settled black with a tiny, but fairly lasting, frothy mocha head. Fore holds the chocolate I don’t get int he aroma and is indeed quite chocolatey and a touch silky, gets roast bitter and coffee acidic throught he middle and goes creamy but very bitter in the finish. Has a bit of a milk stout quality to it. Burnt dark fruit notes appear in the aftertaste. Quite nice. bgburdman9 (823), Columbus, Ohio, USA

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 24, 2007 Bottled. This is from my mini-trade with kramer17801. 12 oz., no label but handwritten name, so it may be filled from the tap or a growler,.so I’ll keep that in mind. Pours shows just a little lighter brown, In the glass it’s black with small red highlights, thin head. Smell is roasty coffee and patent malts, light alcohol as best I can tell with this cold. Taste has burnt coffee notes typical of the style, a backing of plum, and a milky aftertase. A dry stout on steroids. Alcohol kicks in toward the end, and my toes start warming up to it. A relatively low rating, perhaps, but this has come to me under circumstances for which the brewer is not responsible. Schroppfy (1813), Ohio, USA

A little carboardyness in the typical RIS coffee (subdued) and milky chocolate flavors. Served perfect temp, right out of a cool closet. With warming the full range of alcohol fumes plus plummy fruit comes to the fore. The aroma is more severe than the flavor - this is positively milky! Very good, and of course even better company (Argo0’s house). argo0 (6891), Washington DC, USA
