3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 BOLTZ7555 (2378) - Phoenix, Arizona, USA - APR 14, 2008Sparky27...Thanks for a chance to taste a brew with only 10 ratings!!! Hellbilly...thanks for the Phoenix Tasting!!! Always a good thing to get those passionate about beer together!!! Gem quality garnet with eggshell foam. Hoppier than expected given the style...also lower ABV than typical in a barley wine. Age will benefit this tremendously.

Thick, rocky, tan head & red/amber hazy; perfect aroma per style, blend of malt, hops, and alcohol; flava is complex blend of acidic sweetness(blackberries) and dry/spicy hoppiness; feels medium bodied but very foamy on the tongue(which I like-some may not) that leaves my tongue tingling; finishes dry & sweet, leaving the tongue wanting more, and more.
This is one of the top barleywines I’ve ever tasted. And I haven’t rated all of them on this website. I’ve drank a lot more than are recorded here.

Enjoyed at Iron Hill Maple Shade. Golden red pour with a frothy off white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is hoppy, and malty, with strong pine and notes of bread and yeast from the bottle fermentation. Taste is dark malt, plum, piney hops and bready yeast. Medium body. Nice carbonation. Enjoyed it but it’s nothing very special and certainly not worth $20 a bottle at the restaurant.

28th January 2011 Hazy dark red - amber beer, tidy cream coloured head. Light nose of malt and aniseed. Softish palate, a little carbonated bite in the tail. A pretty fruity barleywine. Orange, cherry and pineapple with mildly toffee malt underneath. A little aniseed. Semi dry finish. An easy drinking and memorably fruity barleywine.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 hivemind (658) - New York, New York, USA - JUL 5, 2012
Bottle from the brewery in Newark, DE. Shared with Paul and Erica in Weehawken for the 4th. Couldn’t get a good look at the body but the head is beige/off-white and kind of creamy. Strong hop nose and lots of hops and fruit on the palate. Not as thick-bodied as other barleywines. Not sure I’d agree with those saying it’s more of an IPA, but it does have a stronger hop flavor than expected.

Pours a murky red-brown with plenty of fizzy beige head that laces only a touch. Nose is sweet warming and bready. Taste is very hop forward, earthy, sweet. Very nicely balance no over the top booziness. Very enjoyable brew.
3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Travlr (7984) - Washington, Washington DC, USA - DEC 6, 2011
Draft at the source. Hazy amber color, medium white head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Taste starts sweet but then transitions to bitter pretty quickly. More hoppy than your usual barleywine.

750 ml bottle thanks to Craig. Pours a reddish brown color, fairly opaque, with a medium beige head. A sweet fruity caramel nose, some yeast. The flavor is a well made smooth caramel dominated flavor, some sweet hops, dry, fruity and light yeast. Very nice, clean and tasty.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Glouglouburp (5568) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - JAN 21, 2011
In short: A self-proclaimed Barley Wine that is in fact a grassy and citrusy Double IPA with a weird pine-tree character.
How: Bottle 750ml. Exact age unknown but consumed only a few weeks after receiving the bottle from rgtravers. Thanks a lot Ryan.
The look: Initially clear (gets cloudy last 1/3 of the bottle) golden amber body topped by a large beige head with medium retention
In long: The nose is mainly hoppy, this smells like an IPA (not even a Double IPA). Aroma of citrus fruits, grass and a bit of Pine-Sol™. Taste has caramel, lots of grass, citrus fruits, little tree air freshener, light notes of cardboard/oxidation. The body was a bit viscous/oily but mainly because of the extra smooth carbonation (too smooth). Sweetness was not a factor here with the hops that take over in the finish. No alcohol either. The beer had a lot going for it but also had a few downfalls especially with the pine-tree component that was like Pine-Sol™ or little tree air freshener. This beer had the potential to be a superb citrusy barley wine but at the end was “only very good”. I bet the infamous Sasquatch likes to be called Sasquatch, because his other name Bigfoot just highlights the fact that nobody is impressed by the size of his dick.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 beerbill (3044) - Laurel, New York, USA - JAN 14, 2011
750 ml bottle thanks to my friend J. Pours a slightly hazed reddish amber with a moderate-large off-white head that lasted through the first two sips and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of caramel and sweet malt with some pine notes present as well. The flavor is caramel and sweet malt up front followed by a solid dose of piney hops. Moderate bitterness at the finish caps off this barley wine nicely. Medium-full bodied. Good stuff!
