Created by the brewery’s founder, Quilter’s Irish Death is what we call a dark, smooth, ale. Any attempt at classifying it just ends up sending beer geeks into a style guidelines diatribe. So forget style guidelines. Is your pursuit of micro beer about tasting copies of a style that fit guidelines anyways? (Neither is ours) Irish Death is a malt bomb. We lovingly refer to it as beer candy. We heart our candy store. While tempting to session this beer, the name is a necessary reminder that despite the surprising approachability, this beer weighs in at a hefty 7.8% ABV.

A subdued malt aroma with a hint of chocolate. A great looking beer, pours a rich dark brown color with a creamy tan head. A sweet chocolate malt taste with a full bodied creamy feel and a sweet milk chocolate finish.

16 oz can at Safeco courtesy of running into an old friend. Small world it is, and I’m surprised more and more each day. Copper brown color. Sweet malt heavy aroma. Flavor is very sweet, overly rich caramel malt, and some chocolate. Malt bomb is an understatement. It’s always fun to have a beer that I’ve seen around for several years, but never gave it a full try. Harsh sweetness, and less my type of stout, but good qualities.

Not a big fan of this beer. Not overly sweet, but its sweetness remains unbalanced. Light brownish appearance. Tried on the Ferry back to Seattle in 2016.

Although not a strong palate, you are able to taste ingredients throughout. It is on the more complex side. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draught at GABBF. Pours clear tawny with a medium, creamy tan head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is caramel and cookie malt, vanilla, figs, and leaves. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, light woody hops and bitterness, vanilla, dates and a sweet finish. Full body and medium carbonation.

I really liked this. The Brewer says there is some kerfuffle about what type of beer it is but it seems like a dark ale. Love the malty taste. This is almost bread to me. Very dark color and decent head. Smells remind me of chocolate and toffee. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Growler from Iron Horse, served in pint glass. Pours dark watery brown with a slight reddish tint and thin off-white head. Aroma is lightly sweet, lightly roasty dark malt; notes of vanilla, dark chocolate, roasty coffee stand out. Taste is similar - clean, thin-bodied roasty chocolate malt, smooth creamy body, clean finish with notes of chocolate, toffee, and vanilla. Incredibly thin body, relative to the big rich roasty flavor - a local favorite for converting people to dark beers. The abv is not surprising for all the flavor here, but is impressive given how drinkable this is. Solid beer.

Pours a deep brownish black on tap with thin lacy tan head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma of mild roast and sweet chocolate and caramel. Taste is big on the malt to, with an earthy bitter finish though, not sure if it’s hops or acrid malt. Not bad.

A nice dark beer overall. Pours a deep black Amber color with a thick white head. Smells of caramel, coconut and cream. Taste is smooth and creamy with lots of caramel and coconut, along with some cocoa and vanilla. Smooth finish. Had in the bottle.
