COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Dark, hardy, thick, rich, roasted and chocolaty, this ale is amazingly smooth due to the generous addition of whole oats. Named for a friend of Iron Springs and easily the finest pedal steel player around, Barry Sless, this one is layered with flavors.

Real Strong. Almost imperial to me. Great bitterness and very dry. bitter chocolate and coffee. In the background is a slight licorice flavor. Very good.

UPDATED: MAY 7, 2010 Roasted chocolate malt abounds. There’s excellent sweetness and some floral notes that may be the appearance of some hops. Chocolatey, roasty and sweet, the beer combines these elements excellently. Creamy feel.

Bomber thanks to Robert. Pours a jet black color with a medium brown head- looks awesome! A sweet nose of roast and char. A nice rich flavor with chocolate, milk, light bitter hops, roast, some metal, very smooth and my kind of beer. Very full flavored and a creamy palate. Awesome.

Draft right from the Brewery Ambulance at the San Diego Craft Brewer’s Conference. The aroma is quite intense with concentrated coffee and roasted/toasted malt and hints of sweet cream. The body is a dark brown to black and holds a firm, lasting mocha colored head. The flavor is mild toasted/roasted malts, coffee and milder chocolate notes. A long dry, but still slightly sweet cream accented finish. Quite good. I went back for a refill several times, and that with many other beers available.

On tap at Iron Springs brewpub during SF Beer Week, what a week! The nitro pour has a deep dark body with lasting mocha head of tight foam. The aroma has some roasted malts, some caramel malts and a good bit of burnt malty notes. The taste delivers dark roasted malts and then moves into a bit of roasted malt astringency as well as burnt malts that border on being sort of ashy. It gets even more burnt into the finish. Big roasty to burnt malt beer here. I like it.

On tap at the Slow Food festival in S.F. This dark brown ale poured with a massive tan head that took a while to settle. There was a strong aroma of chocolate. The flavor is all roasted and chocolate malt and is very tasty.
