50cl bottle pours a watery, opaque black with a frothy, tan head. Nose of cookies, chocolate malt candies, bread. Flavor is really weak, light malt, light chocolate, a little bread, watered down brownie batter. Watery, weak finish. The nose promises something enjoyable but everything else is watered down.

Bottle from BevMo - Pours a dark brown color with a one finger thick tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is chocolate and caramel. Perhaps some diacetyl. Flavor is much of the same with the addition of some coffee. Finish is a little bitter. Medium body. A nice beer.

I can’t help but compare this to my favorite double chocolate Stout, Youngs.... Deep black in color... Aroma of roasted malts... Flavor is roasted malts, bitter chocolate, notes of coffee... Overly bitter, more so than I hoped for, not much sweetness, kinda disappointing

Bottle from a trade with cbkschubert. Pours very dark brown color with light brown head. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Slightly burnt malt flavor with some chocolate and some bitterness. Medium to full body with soft carbonation. Decent. Thanks Craig.

Irondale Brewing Swanton’s Rea Pours typical black with a medium tan head and good retention. Sort of oily. Aroma is roasted malts with mild notes of chocolate, coffee and steel (Irondale?) Flavor is slightly bitter for the sake of being bitter. No benefit in the form of nice hop notes. Metal and roasted malts. Unbalanced and lacking something. Not very good

Dogbrick (11492) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - MAR 12, 2011
Bottle from Bevmo in Greenbrae, CA. Pours black with a medium thin tan head that dissipates steadily. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate. Medium body that is sort of dry, sort of creamy. Flavors of mocha, grainy malt and a bit of hops. The finish is roasty with a moderately bitter coffee aftertaste. I was expecting something sweeter and more chocolatey but overall this is pretty good.

Bottle shared by Dogbrick. Black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma is coffee, roasted malt and creamy chocolate. Creamy flavor with milk chocolate and a bitter, roasty coffee finish.

doublebock (554) - California, USA - FEB 22, 2011
Unique aroma of creme brulee and rum. Pours dark black with thin tan lace. Upon first sip its quite obvious that this is a high octane stout with notes of star anise, vanilla, and rum . Pleasant espresso grind finish.

DYCSoccer17 (3629) - Woodland, California, USA - JAN 29, 2011
16 ounce bottle purchased at BeVmo in Vacaville, CA. Aroma is sweet, with some burnt undertones present as well. Light anise, with subdued chocolate notes, despite the name. An attractive, nearly opaque brown-black body with a fair tan head that is resilient. Leaves good lacing. Starts thin, and relatively acidic. Some roasted barley makes an appearance as well as some bitter dark chocolate later on. Metallic notes are also present towards the finish. Decent roastiness and flavor, just too thin, especially for an 8% beer.

Bottle from BevMo. Black color/ tan head. Nice dark roast coffee, multi grain bread aromas. Rich, smooth mouth feel. Dark roasted coffee, toasted multi grain bread flavors, nice burnt malt bitterness to finish.
