14 month barrel aged imperial porter

Rando7 (736) - Iowa, USA - JUN 1, 2014
Bottle pours brown black with tan head, nice persistence and lacing. Aroma of roast and slight bourbon. Taste roast malts with bourbon, slight wood, molasses. Creamy thick palate. Pleasing finish of slight roast and bourbon.

You never know what you’re going to get with these barreled porters, but this is really well done. The taste comes together very well, the oak and bourbon are present but not overwhelming, the palate is a step up from the average porter.

Pours a pitch black with a one finger khaki head with nice lacing on the edges. Aroma is of bourbon, cherries, coco, roasted malts, molasses, dark fruits, coffee, musky wood, and sweet malts Taste is very similar to the aroma with a lot of nice whiskey, woody, cherries, and roasted malts, with just the faintest alcohol notes in the finish. Has a medium-full body with a semi creamy oily mouthfeel, and a moderately bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a tasty, complex imperial porter that shows off what long term barrel aging can do.

22oz bottle-shared by jtclockwork-brown head with trailing lace-black. A-roasty dk malt, bourbon/wood, dk fruit-cherry. T-bourbon, roasty-dk malt, spice hop bite.

Had on tap at Crush and Brew. $8 for the 8oz. pour. Light brown-tinted black liquid; thin, sudsy, khaki ringed head 1 finger in length. Tastes and smells of charcoal, burnt twigs, lactose, rolled oats, sorghum molasses, and citrus oil. I thought it was a tad too thick, and ultimately had more going on than I wanted. I loved that this brewery is so genuinely lustful over porters. It’s thrilling to see someone that dedicated to a style dissociated with imperial stouts or dank IPAs. Ironfire brew those as well, but the porter fascination is quite evident.

Bottle I brought to Dogbones’ apartment for the RBWG early crew Wednesday night. Pours black with brown head. Nose and taste of vanilla, bourbon, oak, coffee, dark fruit, almond and brownie. Deep roast. Medium bodied.

Dark black pour width a thick tan head. Big bourbon nose, even from this stupid small tasting glass. Nice flavor here - if you like bourbon and burnt alcohol (which I do!). A bit thin in the finish, not what I would expect from an imperial anything.

Bottle - Marzipan, vanilla, molasses and oak with the typical bourbon notes. Jet black with a brown head. Oaky bourbon, marzipan, vanilla and roast malts. Nice with a neutral finish, not to sweet or bitter.

Bomber to taster (shared by jtclockwork). Looks good; a mostly opaque dark cola with tan head. Smells solid; dark malt, oak, and light bourbon. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth fouthfeel. Good beer.

> Should be bottling Boot Hill Killer, not this

[ Bottle ][ Texas Liquor ][ 651mL ][ Tired Hands Stemware ][ $29 (free) ][ 2/1/14 ]
>> Pours a clear, deep reddish to black with decent coffee foam. Nose is avocado, soy, fudge, brown sugar, some sour fruit. Taste is boozy, sugary, dairy thickness. Finishes with soy, acidic wood, tart cherry, and lactic sour bite. Interesting, but it was nearly $30 (!!) for this bomber. Thankfully it was free thanks to a very generous couple I met at Texas Liquor who bought this for me to say thank you for helping them pick out a medley of new imperial stouts they hadn’t tried. You two rock :)
