3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
June 25th, 2013 - Everyone knows the IPA, but the IPL is a rarer treat. What makes an IPL? An aggressively hopped lager? The label doesn’t say, but that’s my guess both before and after sampling this version of the beer from Ironfire. The scent is dominantly piney, and recalls images of walking around a copse of pine trees in the Rocky Mountains. There’s also the fibrous scent of twine and the bitterness of lemon pith. But there’s a heavy layer of hops too, which is dry and resinous, and a handful of spice. My mother was a fan of arts and crafts fairs, which were often packed into church gymnasiums, and that heady smell of freshly cut wood, twine and other art supplies shares some aromatic genetics with the Nühell. As textured as the aroma is, the palate is smoothly carbonated. The hops is predominant here, with a dry hop or compressed cop bitterness taking the lead, though it’s a reserved leadership - mild and subtle. The aftertaste is strangely hoppier than the flavor itself, leaving each sip at a high-note. I like it, and hope to see IPLs more widely.

This beer has a nice floral aroma. It has a lot of flavor for a lager but is more mild than your typical India pale. A great balance.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle thanks to Brokensail. Pours a light golden-yellow. Two finger fluffy head. Aromas a light lagered yeast sweetness and sharp grapefruit hop bitterness. Taste is a bit sharp upfront. Grapefruit galore. It settles into a lightly sweet malt backbone before some light floral hop bitterness to round it out. Solid.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle pours with a clear perfectly gold body that supports a near white head of foam. So I thought this was an IPA tick and had I noticed when I bought this it was a lager I likely would have passed on it. The aroma offers up some sweetness, some lagery yeasty fruity esters, tart hoppy grapefruit and then a light peach cotton candy sensation. The taste delivers firm hop notes like grapefruit citrus hops and a peach to slightly mango note. Well behind the hops lurks some soft sugary notes mixed with some lagery yeasty fruity esters. This has a nice bitter hoppiness up front to keep it light and refreshing well above the lagery sweetness. Very glad I didn’t notice this was a lager at the time of purchase.

Bomber with no date. P: A dull clear yellow with a two finger rich white head. S: This carries a great smell, it is very floral, there is some pine, mango, spices, sage, and some melon. T: There is definitely alot less going on here but it keeps its lager identity. There is some cantaloupe, malt, some lime, crackers, grass, and a odd mineral finish. It tends to become rather sweet as it warms. M: Watery with some bitterness and a sticky finish. O: Enjoyable.

On tap. Pours a bright and clean golden yellow. HUGE bright white head, inches thick. Gigantic carbonation (looks like a volcano). Head appears to block aroma. Tastes of banana, lite clove, and slight bubblegum. A very nice beer - I've never seen one this carbonated.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Had on tap at the source. $5 for the full pint. Pours a peachy yellow with a thin white-ringed head resting atop. Tastes and smells of cereal grain, noble hops, white grapes, minerals, and a subdued sweetness resembling watered caramel and vanillin. All in all, a pleasantly drinkable Imperial Pils from Temecula.

Draft at the brewery taproom - Temecula. I fear there was something slightly amiss with the glass of this beer I tried. It wasn’t bad but there were characteristics I would not have expected. Fairly sweet with dried cereal, there are also notes of green pepper and hay. Huh. Lots of odd green pepper notes. Still tasty but I can’t imagine this is as intended.

Bomber from trade. Thanks, GT2! Pours yellow golden with a lacy white head. Aroma of pineapple, tropical fruit, french bread. Has a very dry, pale malt backbone and some grapefruit hop. Slightly mineral at the finish.
